99 Z/28 vs. 96 Cobra???
A good friend of mine just got a 96 Cobra 5 Speed Mystic Chrome with 38,000 miles on it. He is a die hard F*rd fan and swears in and out that his car will beat mine. I know these cars are quick, and I do like this car. However, I want to know how my 99 Z28 stacks up against it. I will race him, but I want to get an idea of what to expect. I know that each car is rated at 305 hp. Unfortunately, I am stuck with a 2.73 posi and a 4L60E. But, I do have 30-40 more ft-lbs of torque. I also added an SLP lid, SLP Loudmouth II, and have a Power Programmer III that is not currently running a tune on my car. The LS1 is a potent motor, but will it stack up against this 4 valve 4.6 mod motor? Any tips to help me out?

I like what I hear, but are you sure you guys arent saying this because we are all die hard LS1'ers? Stick has a pretty good advantage. To answer your question lastcall90, the 2004 Mustang Cobra had the supercharger on it. The 96-98 were just four valve 4.6s.

He has a flowmaster catback already installed, a K&N air filter (FWIW), and soon he will be putting a hand held tune on it (I forget what kind of tune it is, but that might help him out). They have 3.27's from the factory.

Trap speeds are fairly similar between a stock 2.73 LS1 and a 96 Cobra, but a slight adv to the LS1. ET's should be a little more biased in you favour though, a 2.73 Ls1 should be capable of 13.6's with a decent 60' where as a 96 Cobra is more of a high 13 (13.9) type of machine stock.
Just watch for dead spots in the gearing. From a roll I would highly recommend 39mph (or 35-40mph) as you'll kick down to 1st and be at 4400rpm (PEAK torque). Any slower and you're below the power band, any faster and it won't kick down.
Same goes for higher speed rolls. 50mph is a dead spot you want to be over 65mph else to make a race of it, although idea would be 74-76mph. This is again to bring you in at the right point on the power band. 76mph should kick down to 2nd and bring you bang on at 4400rpm again. 50mph will kick down to 2nd and be only 2900rpm (less lb ft and a lot less HP).
If you had 3.23 gears the speeds and shift points are all different.
You should win this race, but get your starting speed wrong and it'll be a lot closer than you might think.
