Default Worked a ZR1 last night

My friend had his poppa's 90 ZR1 out last night. We cruised out to a nice wide open stretch of road and we raced about 5 times. I pulled away every time. From a roll and from a dead stop. LS1 owns the LT5. This was all naturally aspirated (no N20).

Your boy needs to learn how to drive that thing. I would think it would be close but I would still give the advantage to the ZR1 especially if y'all "let them breathe" a little bit. Good kill!!!

Great Kill. I used to think the ZR1s were the end of all cars when they came out. First time I saw one I almost wet myself, I was like 14 years old. I still would like one now because of the investment and the LT5 is still a great engine with a tone of potential

LT5s are sick, I wouldn't say the LS1 owns it, but the LS1 is much mroe advanced motor, and with a few mods it will take the LT5. Good kill!

Nice kill.

I would love to have a zr1. There is one locally for sale at a crummy little used car lot!

Wow, i wasn't expecting all the replies. I don't street race often but I made an exception for this one. My friends stopped over with the zr1 and where like "let's see how the z will do against it". We raced probably 6 times in all. 3 of em from stops, and 3 from a roll. My z would pull away as i shifted into 3rd gear. The zr1 driver has been driving manuals for years (longer than me in fact) so i don't think that is really an issue. In the zr1's defense, the tires on the vette were old and didn't offer much traction but we were both launching soft anyway. All in all while i do love the zr1 and the lt5 motor, i believe the heads intake cam combo of the 02 ls1 just outperforms the lt5 in stock form.

I have to disagree. The LT5 was a all aluminum hand built motor developed by Lotus and GM and made by Murcury Marine. It had 9.5:1 compression 32 valves and double overhead cams and dual throttle bodies. It does seem to require a deep wallet to make over 400 rwhp though. I feel the LS1 is more efficient, but not necessarily more advanced. Please correct me if I am wrong.

Yes they are bad ***. At one time the lt5 was selling as a crate engine for 26k. I've personally seen one of these cars sell at auction for 75k. These cars will appreciate.

I saw a trivia question on car and driver (I think) that asked "what gm div never used a ohc engine". I saw this about two months ago. Their answer was chevy? I wanted to jump through the screen!!

I think chevy should make the z06 the base model and go ape **** for a premium vette.

Also, 2 injectors per cylinder, right?

yes, 2 injectors per cylinder, injector housing(S) are ported as standard procedure on aftermarket LT5 heads.

I raced a 90 or so ZR1 a year or so ago. I am not sure if the kid driving was that talented, but I pulled him by about 1/2 a car. Very close. I have always wanted one of those. When I went to the lot to get my 92 Camaro, they had a brand new 92 Polo Green ZR1 on the lot, sticker was 66,000.

Nice Kill though.

Yeah, Nice kill,
When ZR1's came out, I thought that's where the Camaros would be heading soon. As, it is usualy the norm that 'Vet options eventualy make their way into F-bodies. But that didn't happen and eventually the LS1 was born.
If I had to choose 5 'Vettes I would go: 63 split window, 69 427cu, 77 L82, 92 ZR1, and of course a 2003 ZO6. (My choices are not solely based on performance but also on the Era they represent)

I would only make one change to that list, instead of the 77 L82 I would go with a 67 427. My dad has a 69 LeMans Blue 427/435. I love the car. It has 33,000 original miles. He bought it brand new with money he saved while in Vietnam.

The compression ratio is higher than that, it's 11.0:1

To get a ZR-1 to 400 RWHP, rquires header, port and polish of Injector housings the plenum and TB and a custom tune. All of this is 2,000 dollars away.

I would love to see the results of the race from 1/4 mile to a standing mile.

I have a good friend that owns a black '90 ZR1. We have raced up to 160 MPH. My car would slowly pull away from the ZR1 even at those speeds (this back when I only had a filter and x-pipe). So the LS1 will fair very well against a ZR1. An F-body may have more problems with one at high speeds due to aerodynamics. Also if he had one of the later cars with 405 that may have been enough for him to take me back then.

LT5 power numbers seemed to be all over the map - probably a result of the hand assembly (e.g. according to the ZR1Net the 90-92 LT5's varied from 355fhwp to 414fwhp). There are also credible stories of some heads "accidentally" receiving some mild port work, etc., while being assembled. So, beware that one ZR1 (even stock for stock) is not necessarily the same as another.

These cars IMO really need three things to come alive - a 4.10 rear, nice headers/exhaust, and an aftermarket shifter (the stock one sucks). Look at the dyno chart on a stock LT5 and you'll see hp is pretty much flat from about 5800rpm on up to redline (~7200rpm). Headers and a free-flowing exhaust can move the power peak up several hundred rpm.

Very fun car for those that have the time, dedication, and $$ to make them really go.
