yes, undo the 4 bolts at the top, then drop the complete assembly out. Then there is a bolt on top of the strut shaft that needs to come off so you can get the top mounting plate off the strut, and transfer to your new QA1. ALSO, MAKE SURE YOU USE A STRUT SPRING COMPRESSOR ON THE STRUT SPRING BEFORE YOU TAKE OFF THE TOP NUT ON THE STRUT SHAFT!!!!!!1

FYI,
You don't need a spring compressor with the threaded body QA1s, just loosen the spring seat jam nut, then lower/adjust the spring seat down until there's no tension in the spring.

My bad.
Definitely use a spring compressor with the stock springs!

Thanks Guys, it is the front strut it is off the car. The plate that sits on top of the strut that the 4 bolts connects the strut under the fender well of the car. There is nut on top which holds the shock, under that is the rubber piece "isolator" I suposse; that comes off but then thta plate still does not slid off. Again the plate is what I need so that I can connect new strut to the car. Hopes this expains better what I am trying to do.

Lightbulb

Spray it down with some liquid wrench, let it sit for about 30-45 minutes, now try hitting the rusted area with a hammer, including the end of shock shaft since your not reusing the shocks.

IMO, thread the nut back on the end of the shaft, then place a piece of scrap metal over the end of the nut, now hit the metal really hard!

While this method works fine, I would still recommend using a spring compressor. That way the spring perch will be in the exact spot when reassembling everything so you don't have to readjust the ride height again. I would also seriously recommend taking the strut/spring assembly to a machine shop to remove the springs. Much easier and safer.

To the OP - The nut on the stock assembly is notorious for rusting making it a pita to remove. Like I mentioned above, try taking it to a shop that cam remove it. It should cost around $20 per shock.

you can do it yourself. Youve got it this far, might as well go the rest of the way. I soaked mine down with penetrating oil/pb blaster. Let it set overnight, then removed the top nut, and smacked the shaft with a hammer. Came right off.

I had the same issue with the nut being really badly rusted in place. I tried sliding a metal sleeve over it and smacking it with a hammer after soaking it in liquid wrench, and nothing. I ended up using a dremel tool with a small cutoff wheel and cut the nut off. Ended up taking 5 minutes.

Go to napa and by a new upper strut mount part number 261-3195 and 261-3196 they are about 85.00 bucks. I just replaced them today, while putting on my new qa1's. Much easier then fighting with rusty bolts

Also a good point...

Either way, I've heard it's not a bad idea to put some chassis lube on the nut and threads before putting it all back together to (hopefully) minimize rust.

Thanks again guys we tried all of the above think the shock mount has just seized on the shock bolt ,Oreilly's will have a pair Tues. Guess I have to wait for another weekend before I will be able to take it for a test drive. so close all I can do is listen to idle on jack stands, after 3 years of waiting that brings a smile to my face.

When reassembling replace the shock shaft nut with a stainless steel nut.

I picked one up an Ace Hardware. They have a really nice selection.

And as a little preventive maintenance coat the shock shaft where it goes through the upper mount with some Anti-seize, and also any exposed metal where the shock shaft comes through the top of the upper mount.
