Default front strut/spring assembly

2002 Trans am. Does anyone have a picture/process of the correct assembly procedure for the front struts? Long story short, I purchased a set of assembled front struts and they were assembled incorrectly. They were missing the plate that prevents the strut shaft from pulling thru the top rubber mount. I disassembled what I had and installed the metal plate on top of the rubber mount. Working OK, but since the car is too low, I decided to replace the springs. Not wanting to mess with the existing parts, I purchased a pair of Bilstein struts new springs and all ( I hope) the required pieces. Shop manual and parts catalog arent clear as to order of assembly. Need help. Want to verify that I have all the required parts. A video or a diagram, dont want to do this a third time. Thanks.

Found this pic in parts catalog. Doesnt look correct, I believe the plate should be on top of the rubber mount.

Yeah #8 and #9 should be flip-flopped. The rubber plate should sit inside or on top of the mount, then the shock nut gets tightened down on top of the rubber plate

Thanks for the reply. I have added some pics and I have some questions. One is what is the correct positioning for the white bump stop in the bellows/shield? Looks to me like it should be installed with the wide end inserted in to the shield. Two, where does that silver plated metal collar/cup get installed, or is it a universal part that was included with the strut ( different application)?

The metal collar gets put on top of the shock directly. Not sure why it is shipped separate from the shock but just slide it down and tap it onto the top of the shock body.

Bump stop goes inside the bellows. Bellows should always cover the shaft. Thing is, that looks like one of those universal bellows that may just not fit very well with the bump stop. Pics are extremely tiny so I can't really tell.

I don't have any bellows or bump stop on my front shocks as the stock ones were long gone and dead I haven't any issues from that, even on my old car that was driven in the winter crap. I don't know how much the bellows/boot really helps since they are far from being sealed. Bump stop, yeah, probably should have that.

Went to the school of hard knocks this afternoon. I installed the collars, only to find out that Bilstein leaves them loose so you can install the lower spring base/pocket. They wont fit over the collars. So I removed the collars, installed the spring base and re-installed the collars. When I finish this project I will be qualified as a master tech at "grease em and cheat em" emporium. Anyway, I enlarged the pics of the boots and bump stops. My guess is that the smaller end of the bump stop goes in to the top of the boot and the ring at at the top of the bump stop goes in to the groove at the top of the boot. Any opinions? Goal is to be an honor grad, better starting pay. FYI, just click on the pic for the larger version.

I put those same boots on my car just last week. You have to push the foam boot into the upper lip of the boot like in the second pic of post #6. I thought it was odd at first also, but it seems to work.

So you are saying that the white foam bump stop extends past the top of the black boot?
