Default Opinions on best bitin' street tire?

Since the install of a B1 & LS6 intake all I do is spin through 1ST & 2ND gear, looking for a tire that bites good on the curves and straight line is there one out there?

Firestone Firehawks are a good curve/hooking tire. If you want more hook look into the Nitto drag radials...they will outhook a Firehawk from a launch.

I would have gone with the Firestone Firehawk but they don't make them in 295-35/18 which is my rear size. From what I've heard these are great street tires.

I ened up going with Michelin Pilot Sport's and their grip is phenominal. They are one of the best dry/wet street traction tires. They are expensive however. Just to give you an idea of how well they hook. Before these tires I could spin in 2nd and chirp going into 3rd no problem. Now with the pilot's I can chirp going into 2nd but thats it.

The only way I can keep them spinning it to launch from about 4000 RPM and then keep it between 5000-6000 rpm. This will keep them spinning while in 1st gear.

Corner handling has vastly improved as well.

So far I've put 10,000 miles on them and they have tons of tread left. Although 50%+ of my driving is highway cruising below 2000 rpm.

I have a 2002 Z28 with a cat-back and lid - about 315 rwhp.

Also just to clarify - these are street tires. While they will provide decent traction at the track they wont grip like a real race tire.

Well between the Yoko AVSs and the Goodyear GSCs that I have tried I would have to say the Yokos ! <img border="0" alt="[judgement]" title="" src="graemlins/gr_judge.gif" />

However I have a set of Nitto dragradials on the way ! <img border="0" title="" alt="[Wink]" src="gr_images/icons/wink.gif" />

And a set of used Micelin road race tires that were scrubbed in for a 97 Viper ! <img border="0" title="" alt="[Eek!]" src="gr_eek2.gif" />

Yes the Michelins are 335/35/17s ! <img border="0" title="" alt="[Cool]" src="gr_images/icons/cool.gif" />

I will have more info for U after I try out these tires ! <img border="0" title="" alt="[Wink]" src="gr_images/icons/wink.gif" />

Firehawks have been working very good on my car.360+ hp and no spin after clutch is fully released.I pull consistant 1.9 60's on them too when others with GSC's can only get 2.1's.

I'm really happy with my Michelin Pilot Sports! The 275/35ZR18 and 295/35ZR18 set me back quite a few pennys but they handle awesome and look cool. With so little sidewall it is still very easy to light em up! 17" shouldn't be too bad.

I have to admit the French are crazy on the details, on the corner of the tires, about every fifth tread block there is a tiny little Michelin Man climbing the tire!

If you are looking for an absolutely incredible street tire, look no further than right here:
http://www.toyo.com/tires/tire_lines/high_perf/ra1.html

It's the Toyo RA-1 competition tire. I have a pair on the back of my Formula and they are amazing! I can launch off a stoplight at 100% full throttle without spin (once the tires are warmed up anyways) and my car is a 3.23 geared A4, so that's not something normally possible with a street tire. Also, these tires are Z rated and are designed foremost as a road racing tire, so the curves are something they are definitely capable of.

They come with 8/32" of tread depth too, and are amazing in the rain. I've had these tires since early April, and have put about 2500 miles on them so far and they are holding up very well.

Default Re: Opinions on best bitin' street tire?

I've had these sets of tires since 1996:

- BFG Comp TA [1995 TA]
- Michelin Pilot MXX3 [TA & 1998 Z28]
- Michelin Pilot Sport [Z28]
- Bridgestone S-02 Pole Position [Z28]
- Bridgestone S-03 Pole Position [Z28]

Dry: The MXX3 was the best (although with 160 less RWHP on previous car), followed by the S-03, then the S-02.

Wet: S-03 first, then S-02, then Pilot Sport.

Handling: MXX3 first, closely followed by the S-03, then S-02.

The S-03 is much less expensive than the S-02 and Pilot Sport, but I'm not sure which tire size you're looking for. i.e., in a 255/265 width you'll save about $60-70 per tire last I checked.

WRT the Toyo tire, I'd hope it's sticky with a treadwear rating of 40! <img border="0" title="" alt="[Eek!]" src="gr_eek2.gif" />

I forgot all about the potenza when I posted earlier. I have heard the bridgestone potenza S-03 is a fantastic tire. I have a 10.5" wide rim and I wanted a 295 wide tire, which they dont make in the S-03.

Here are the tire and rim sizes they make:
http://www.firestonetire.com/products/s03pptec.htm If they make it for your rim size then I would seriously consider them.

Also, check these ratings out here:
http://www.tirerack.com/tires/bridgestone/bs_s03.jsp These are about as good ratings as you will see with any street tire.

gm_jim:
The pilot sport A/S is an all season tire. It handles decent in snow, but doesnt handle as well on dry pavement. The pilot XGT V4/Z4 is also more of an all season tire. By all season they mean dry/wet/snow handling.

I was personally looking into the nitto 555R2's, they are designed as a roadrace tire, with a treadwear of 100 i think, I was interested in the TA1's, but once I saw they have a treadwear of 40 (which was the same as my hoosier slicks), I dont think they will hold up for me. I need to DRIVE to the event with them on, not change tires down there.

anyone else have the TA1's? how much mileage are you guys getting out of them?

EDIT, forget the toyos for me, they dont even make them in my size http://www.toyo.com/tires/tire_specsheet.cfm?id=1, but i still want to know what you can get out of them

So far I've got less than 3k on my Toyo RA-1s but they look to be holding up very well so I fully expect at least 10k out of them for sure. Tires tend to wear slower on the last half of the tread than the first half as well (less tread squirm equals less heat, so less wear) so I might even go further than that.

Well I have had several sets of tires on my 2000 Z28 M6. The car has K&N and a lid, GMAF, FTRA, and a Moser 12-Bolt w/4.10's (I understand it's a wierd combo...don't ask) At any rate here is my beakdown on tires.

Goodyear RSA's suck my ***. Even with the 3.42's I would spin hard in the 2-3 shift and spin again in the 3-4 shift. I went offroading in th rain with them under me twice with about an inch of standing water on the road each time. Luckily I managed not to hit anything with those tires on. The best 60' I ever pulled with these at the track was a 2.17 The only good thing I can say about those is that they made one hell of a smokey burnout the day before I installed my new Kumho's.

Kumho Ecsta Supra 712's Were an excellent all around street tire. Great in Rain. Good in the corners. I could still spin them in the 1-2 shift, Bark them a bit in the 2-3 shift, and they barely scrubbed in the 3-4 shift. My best 60' at the track with these was a 2.09 but I experienced much less wheelspin in the shifts at the track then with the RSA's.

BFG Comp TA Drag Radials Were the tires I decided to go with after putting a nail through the sidewall of the kumho during an evasive interstate exit ramp maneuver <img border="0" title="" alt="[Eek!]" src="gr_eek2.gif" /> . The BFG's hook really hard at the track. I get almost no wheelspin with them at the track whatsoever. On the street they hook way better then any tire I have ever seen (Nitto DR's Included). I can bark them into second, and chirp them into 3rd, but nothing after that.I wouldn't suggest a lot of hard cornering with these and definately wouldn't recommend driving over 40Mph in rain at all with them either. The rearend likes to get a bit drifty in the rain no matter how heavy or light the rain may be. Treadwear on them was horrible in the first 1000 miles but once I got down to about 1/32" tread depth they levelled off and the more they wear the harder they hook.

Dunlop SP Sport 9000's are another good all around tire. They don't hook too bad off the line (keep in mind I had 315's). I would compare their straight line traction to that of the Kumhos. In the corners they hook exceptionally well. Although they are not a very audible tire, in the corners when you push them past the limit they are very forgiving, unlike some tires where when you push it to the limit in a corner they just give up and send you around and around, these will still allow for some margin of error on the drivers part once their friction threshold has been broken. They are also an excelent tire in the rain. On a scale of 1-10 I'd rate them a 7 overall.

Yokohama AO32R. They saved me from looping my SS at 145 mph on a I-5 curve. A made for auto cross tire. Great traction on street with over 400 rwhp at the time

I've had:
Goodyear GSC = Good in rain but that's it!
Goodyear F1 = Better than GSC, but look like
a passenger all-weather tire <img border="0" alt="[barf]" title="" src="graemlins/gr_barf.gif" />
Goodrich Comp TA = Real pleased - careful in rain
Goodrich G-Force KD = AWESOME dry tire -using now
not too good in rain. <img border="0" title="" alt="[Big Grin]" src="gr_grin.gif" />
G-Force KD's are about $280 apiece and they are
everything I had hoped, but if I had to do it over - and some day I will - I would try the Goodrich G-Force KDW's which even though they are not quite up to the KD performance dry, they look like they might be a better all-around tire and still have a very aggressive look to them. They look nice and they cost about $180 apiece instead of $280. <img border="0" title="" alt="[Wink]" src="gr_images/icons/wink.gif" />

Anyone used the Eagle F1 Supercars? They come on the Z06. The reason I want them is they have a 315 on an 18. There are 1 or two others (Bridgestone) that have that but the eagles look really nice (never thought I'd say that). They have a 335 also <img border="0" title="" alt="[Eek!]" src="gr_eek2.gif" />

If i go with 17 I'll be picking between the Goodrich or Nittos (DR on back Z on front either way). 18 looks damn great on our cars though!
