Default Widest rear tire I can put on my 17" WS6 rim?

I basically want launch traction more than I do cornering traction. What would be the best for both worlds? Brand and sizes for front and rear.

Thanks

I have a 99 SS... I have 285/40ZR17's in the front... and 315/35R17's in the rear.. i have problems with rubbing the inner fenders, but it can be solved with a good hammer and an hour of your time... If you want to steer clear of that mess.. 285's will fit great with no rubbing..

Did your handling improve when you went with these tires. No strange or mushy feelings. Was it real solid?
I may try the 315's and just mod the wheelwell if need be.
Do you know how much wider the 285 and 315 is over the stock 275?

Car is not lowered so I had absolutley no rubbing going on at all !

I did remove the bumpstop !

No hammering needed !

Unless you have a 17x10 plus rim dont bother putting the 315s on the rim. They will wear out quicker and you will have less contact patch with the road which is what you are looking for.

Personally, i think 285s fit much better.. They certainly look and fill the fenders better. If you dont want to worry about rubbing, or the slight sway from the huge rear tires.. then go with 285's.. They are awesome... I have Potenza RE730's.. great tire.. Traction AA Temperature A Treadwear 300.. One of the best tires ive ever seen, as far as street tires go.. and about $160-180 a peice.. better than 300 each for others...

Will the 285's be visually wider than the 275's?

If so, how much?

I run P285's on my rear (feeling that was the widest I could go on a 17x9" wheel. The do LOOK a bit wider than the 275's... acutally, they are just bigger... about a 1/4" taller, 26". I run them for street longevity. They are Nitto's, but not 555R's, just their performance street tire. If I was stock power, I feel they would be great for traction, but with a SY3500 and GWP Procharger, they don'thave a prayer.

I would love to try Nitto 555Rs in a P315 size, but feel I need a 10" wide rim and a solution for the fender well clearance. But, I'm not sure about that.

I'd be hoping for better traction and a wider appearance.

285/40/17's on my stock 17 x 9's will look wider?

How's that?

I thought 315/35/17's were wider. How do all these damn numbers work anyway?

So, I take it my best bet would be 275/40/17 in front,
and 285/40/17 in the rear.

Make it 285/40ZR17's all around...

To clarify what the numbers mean...

285 is the section width of the tread in MM..
40 is the aspect ratio between the sidewall and the tread.. that means that the sidewall is 40% as tall as the tread is wide...
and obviously Z is the speed rating, R means Radial.. and 17 is the size of the wheel...

285, I don't know what you mean by "section width" of the tread. 285 MM isn't enough to mean from one side of the tire to the other.

What do you mean...? 285mm is almost 12 inches wide.

I have 315 drag radials mounted on my stock 17x9 SS 5 spokes... They look awesome from the rear.. Great straight line traction, but like i said before.. you will get some rubbing on lowered cars in the corners.. Email me if you want a pic of my SS with these tires in rear.. also have pics of 285's in front... same pictures.. hehe
