Default Can anybody teach me to TIG weld, in DFW area?

I would love to learn to weld, I have my on cheap TIG welder, and I would love to learn to build my own turbo manifolds or make my own brackets for anything. I'm willing to pay

Do some reading and then its practice. I did the same thing, I bought a machine...did some reading and taugh myself. I learned on aluminum first, so it made everything else easy.

Yeah aluminum and stainless are the hardest. I would say get a flat piece of steal and weld to it. Easiest way to learn. Tig welding is not that hard. Arc welding on the other hand is an art in some cases.

Yeah... i'm gonna have to agree with you that mig welding, followed by flux-core stick welding is the easiest. Tig is challenging, especially on thin aluminum.

Start practicing on scrap metal..it's the fastest way to learn.

i have a good friend that welds. mig and tig. i've done little welding for fun on his machine. mig, and tig. tig is definately harder, but much better looking.
word of advice. DON'T TOUCH THEN ROD AND TUNGSTEN WHILE ON, it will light you up good.
other than that, read and practice.

I just started tig welding about 2 weeks ago - I too have nobody to "teach me", so I have just been going at it DIY-style. I put in about 10 hours on practice pieces - just making worms on flat plate, joining the plate in laps, fillets, and butts - and now I'm building a cart for my welder and plasma cutter. It's slow going, especially now that my cart weighs close to 80 lbs and I'm trying to do everything in a flat position. flipping around the 80 lb cart is so much fun. Kneeling and crouching while welding and trying to move the foot pedal, ha. Now I see why tig is called "labor intensive".

I've been posting my adventures in tig welding over on SeatStaysUp...

well school doesnt realy teach you much either. unless you ask of course wich is something i never do and im about the best in class. you just need to have fun while your doing it and try diff things to see how things happen. all school does is make you buy a book, make you go all the time. all they supply is the machines and gas

No one can teach you, ya just have to learn on your own. I took welding class last year and she just said have fun. We all just took turns and taught our selves and each other. She told us how to hold it and that was it. After a few days I was running clean *** beads and got a 100 in the class. Some people are just good at it.

Also having a good machine and having it set up right makes a huge difference. I can't weld for **** on the machine at work, it's got like a 1 second lag and is just a pain in the *** to use.

Pearland Highschool.. Only a Junior lol. Keep forgetting my definition of school is different from pretty much everyone else.

I drive by San Jac in Pearland every day though, nice little school and a great town to live in.

Yeah if he can find a job doing it. Most places still like you to have certifications in it, or have several years of professional experience.

I met a guy who had like 6 certifications in welding and couldn't get a job anywhere.
