Default I have about $1000 left from my tax return. I really want a cam installed...

So after I payed a few people back, I have about a grand left from my tax return. I've been wanting a new cam for a really long time since I'm still running the stock one. I know that an actual shop would laugh, but maybe an experienced member on here can help me out. I'm looking for a cam, springs, install, and tune (dyno or programmer as long as it works) for around $1000.

If anyone on here can help me out, please let me know. I live in League city, so the closer the better.

Edit: I have an automatic, and was told a long time ago that I'm limited in cam choices due to that.

He stated the location. Good luck with that man. The cheapest I ever found a shop to do all of that was about $1800. Remember... You get what you pay for. Do you really want to get a "discount" cam install? I mean, they're going INSIDE of your motor and messing with stuff. That's like going to a discount surgeon. You might get lucky and find someone to do a good job, I'm just saying be careful.

So you pretty much want the tune and labor done for free? If someone jumps on this please let them know I need a forged 454 lsx. I've got $3k.

He's right, I doubt it will happen. Parts alone will cost you $700-$1000.

I spent more than 1000 bucks just on the cam package. Its going to be really difficult for you to get everything done for that price. As mentioned above, you get what you pay for. And with that you will probably be paying a lot more in the long run for a cheap install and tune. As far as the question if you are limited as to what cam you can get for an A4, depends on if you have a converter in the car or not. If not, then it wouldn't be wise to go too big.

I do all my own installs but everyone is right, install parts and tune alone are close or more than $1000 depending on tune rates. You do get what you pay for when it comes to tuning, I've had mine re-tuned 3 times.

man the cheapest i have heard of a shop doing was g-force, they did my buddies cam and spring for about 1200 +/- but he already had them tune it before but if he hadnt, thats another 500... so your looking at ATLEAST 1700-1800... you could really save yourself some money if you buy the parts and do it yourself but if you dont know what the hell your doing your better off saving that 1K until you get about 2K to do the cam install... i would go with g-force cause they are closer than LMR but either way you could not go wrong, both do top notch work!

G-Force just quoted me about 2 grand for:

G-Force Lifetime Dyno Tune
Comp Cam of your choice
Patriot Gold Valve Springs
Comp Pushrods
Installation including all fluids filters and gaskets

But they said any cam would be fine, and they all vary in price, 300-400+

I can help you out for cheap but i really think its going to be more around 1200-1300. Good cam kit is around 700 shipped from Thunder racing. I do cam installs on the side for $250. and tuning runs around $300-$400.

Parts are about $750 alone and most private installers such as myself charge about 300 for the labor, and then there is a tune that cost at min $250 from some of the local out of the house guys. So I think the cheapest you are going to get out is about 1300 and that is with out the gaskest or fluid so just keep saving in my opinion. GL.

Shop the parts classifieds. I saw a MS3 on craigslist the other day for 200 dollars, I bought my 918s for $90 from a member on here brand new. Pushrods will be another 100 or so, plus gaskets and coolant... 60 or so. LS2 timing chain around 40 also.

200
90
100
60

490 total parts.

225 for mail order tune from Texas Speed and find someone to pay 285 to do your cam swap. It is definitely possible. I mean if you try you can save alot on parts.

yes, it can be done....but you have to accept the fact that:

1) there's no guarantees that any of those parts are actually what they say they are.
2) there's no guarantees that you won't get scammed.
3) there's no kind of warranty on the parts/labor.
4) it's likely going to take much longer to get everything purchased/installed/tuned than a pro shop.

so if you're ok with all that, then by all means go for it....personally, i'd save the extra money and get it done right, the first time, and get all the warranty/guarantee that goes along with it.

If you got an auto, maybe your money would be better spent on a good torque converter, one that would allow you to go with more options for a cam in the future. You would also get more performance out of your car with one.
