Good heads/cam setup or supercharger?
I am picking up an 81 Trans Am Tuesday and I want to drop an LS1 in it. No bull **** this time lol, I am actually going to restore one for once. But what would a good set up be? I would like people to recommend their own set ups and dyno numbers. Is $2500 a good budget for 450rwhp? I would like a choppy hell raising cam.
Or should I get a procharger or supercharger for the 400 in it? I have always wanted a car with a big roots blower sticking through the hood. I figured after everything was said and done I would have $5000 in the ls1/t56, and I am thinking a supercharger, carbs etc would be the same price.

i second the post saying boost gets expensive fast
it al depends how fast you really want to go
if your looking for a car quick but not crazy fast
go heads and cam? (anyways if you get good heads they could be used again if you go boost?)

I would honestly just to a heads and cam, much more reliable than a cheap turbo setup. 450 would be tough with your budget, but you can get close to that. Get some ported 243s, and a MS3, or something in the 23x/23x .60x/.60x range. Port your LS6 intake (assuming the LS1 is an 01+). And get it tuned by someone like Gforce, I'm sure you can get close to your goals. I have a friend who made 450 cam only with a MS3.

A turbo is harder to install than a procharger (a procharger is a supercharger btw ;]) Procharger's are centrifugal, not roots, but you may have been referring to other types in your first post. If you're budget is $2500, forget going FI. Link to the kit for $2400 plz? I'd like to see it. Going FI means so much more to go with it. The whole fueling system (Im speaking from the perspective of a Procharger, since that's what I've researched) is several thousand alone, plus a new rear end to hold up the power, plus a new tranny to also withstand the power, plus a forged bottom end if you want to raise that boost level above 10 PSI. These FI setups also work better with Cammed and head setups, good heads run over 2k alone sadly, and a cam is another 400-500, plus supporting accessories.
A D1SC Procharger is 6500k for the whole system, an F-1C (my blower of choice) is 7500. If you call the right ppl (cant say who, dont want to screw them over by saying it publicly on the forum, PM if you want to know) you can get a D1SC complete brand new for 5k and an F-1C for 5500. A really good turbo should cost the same if not more than a Procharger, and a lot of turbo owners would agree, installing and maintaining them is a bitch.
What's the most you'll put into this?

I am hoping 3500 to 4000 MAX with everything, as it it's in the car and running plus the cost of the engine. I found an 01 ls1 t56 for $2000 so that's taken care of.

if you had an ls6 i would say boost it. but i say fix all the restrictions of the ls1 first. ie: h/c/i/valve train/fuel/exhaust....then see if you still want some boost. or if you can afford it.

All you will need is a turbo, and fuel system.
Might be better off doing something with the 400

Leave the true Pontiac motor in the true Pontiac car. You don't have a Chevrolet, you have a REAL Pontiac. Don't disrespect the brand. The only way id drop a LS1 in the car if you plan on completely modernizing the car. I think 400s are way cooler than LS1s anyways, however LS3/7/9s are a different story.
