1- they are the most reliable firearm on the planet
2-they are very inaccurate shooters( ever heard of spray and pray?)
3-the are very cheap and easy to manufacture
AR15/M16 platform are on the opposite end of the spectrum from the AK. The AR's gas system is very dirty and lack of maintenance will result in jams and other types of failures. AR's can be highly accurate weapons(I believe soldiers have to qualify at 600 meters with open sights), I have a precision AR I built that shoots less than MOA past 500 yards.
Heres a few of the AR15's I have built-
Im thinking about selling this one, 20" heavy barrel 5.56

Light weight 5.56

Long range 20" rifle with side charging handle

Various others in my arsenal

A couple of AR10'S

The side charger I just built was the result of wanting the ultimate in accuracy out of the .223/5.56 caliber. The gun was built with billet upper and lower receivers, noveske 20" barrel, timney trigger, and etc. Im currently working on some handloads for it. I havent had a chance to take it out past 100 yards yet but at a 100 it put 10 rounds on paper that you could cover with a quarter.

One more thing I would like to add here. If your really interested in a AR, I would consider building one to. To me it makes the gun alittle more special knowing I built it and it gives you a good understanding of how the firearm operates.
Guns are just like cars, if your a chevy man, chevy is the best thing since sliced bread. If your a ford man, ford is the best thing since peanut and jelly.... See what I'm getting at?
There is only about 3-5 big machine shops that mass produce the receivers and then sell them to Rock River, Bushmasters, Colt, DPMS etc etc etc etc..... Don't believe me? Look on your upper for a small horse shoe, ohm symbol, hourglass etc....
As far as building a gun, you get what you want and not alot of bullshit that you will end up replacing. It's super easy to build an AR...dum
If you want to buy one, go to a gun show and look around. Shop around, there is always a smoking hot deal...Hold a few, play with a few and ask questions. The only dumb question is the one you don't ask.dum
I would stick with an .223 (5.56) cartridge. It's cheaper to shoot, will take down small game and won't punish your shoulder.dum
Www.ar15.com dumlook around on there....there is a ton of great info, pics etc on there
I wouldn't tell a damn person that. On pretty much any well name brand AR in .223 you should be able to do 1.5 groupes @ 100 yards on open sights.dum
