I can group with in a 12" @ 500 meters with iron sights, a 20" barrel and 3 different wind calls in the Mojave desert.

There is some inaccurate info in this thread. AK-47's are famous for 3 things,
1- they are the most reliable firearm on the planet
2-they are very inaccurate shooters( ever heard of spray and pray?)
3-the are very cheap and easy to manufacture

AR15/M16 platform are on the opposite end of the spectrum from the AK. The AR's gas system is very dirty and lack of maintenance will result in jams and other types of failures. AR's can be highly accurate weapons(I believe soldiers have to qualify at 600 meters with open sights), I have a precision AR I built that shoots less than MOA past 500 yards.

Heres a few of the AR15's I have built-

Im thinking about selling this one, 20" heavy barrel 5.56

Light weight 5.56

Long range 20" rifle with side charging handle

Various others in my arsenal

A couple of AR10'S

IDK about soldiers but being a former Marine we had to qualify @ 500m with open sights. The long range rifle you have here is the ****, one day I'm gunna build one like this when I can afford it.

I wasnt sure about the 600 meters, but shooting 500 meters with iron sights is no small task.

The side charger I just built was the result of wanting the ultimate in accuracy out of the .223/5.56 caliber. The gun was built with billet upper and lower receivers, noveske 20" barrel, timney trigger, and etc. Im currently working on some handloads for it. I havent had a chance to take it out past 100 yards yet but at a 100 it put 10 rounds on paper that you could cover with a quarter.

Sorry no Nikons here. My long range guns have Nightforce or Leupold Mark 4's. The short range guns have Leupold CQ/T's,Aimpoints, or Eotechs. If you tell which pic your referring to I will tell you what the optic is.

we shot at a full size silhouette and the last 2 times a qual'd i shot in a 12" group center mast. At that distance you could cover the entire silhouette with the front post sight, that is the only time i ever used the "peep sight"

Thats a Nightforce NXS 2.5-10 x 32. I installed the mini red dot on it for taking shots up close.

One more thing I would like to add here. If your really interested in a AR, I would consider building one to. To me it makes the gun alittle more special knowing I built it and it gives you a good understanding of how the firearm operates.

As far as building a gun, you get what you want and not alot of bullshit that you will end up replacing. It's super easy to build an AR...dum

If you want to buy one, go to a gun show and look around. Shop around, there is always a smoking hot deal...Hold a few, play with a few and ask questions. The only dumb question is the one you don't ask.dum

I would stick with an .223 (5.56) cartridge. It's cheaper to shoot, will take down small game and won't punish your shoulder.dum

Www.ar15.com dumlook around on there....there is a ton of great info, pics etc on there

I wouldn't tell a damn person that. On pretty much any well name brand AR in .223 you should be able to do 1.5 groupes @ 100 yards on open sights.dum
This is true. There are only a few that actually make the parts. I have a DPMS lower that I assembled myself. Upper is a rock river chrome lined unit. A4 style upper. You can start around 7-800 and up. Mine complete as it sits now is in the 1400 range. That is not counting the accessories I have added. Flash supressors, grips, stalks, and anything else you can think of are all optional choices you can make. That said that is when it gets expensive.

Ok, at this point in the thread, I think it would be appropriate for someone to post up a "how-to" on building your own AR. Ie., "go to this web site and buy this", "then go to this web site and buy this", "then go to a gun store and buy this". I wouldn't even classify myself as an enthusiast, but I can hit a water buffalo turd at 100 yards with my russian built AK on the iron sight, and I want an AR. LOL!

You are correct it is an Aimpoint. Its a Comp M4 with 3x magnifier. I actually like the aimpoint over eotechs, but I would suggest looking at both as different people like differen things.

The gun in question is actually classified as an SBR(short barreled rifle) which requires a stamp from the ATF just like the suppressor does. As far as build costs, I only use high parts in personal guns and I probably have around a grand in that one with out the ATF stamps and suppressors. If I were to try to buy it complete from a manufacturer it would probably be double what my build cost was.

To the OP, this is a very good example what building/piecing one together can net you. Without the optics and high end quad rail( a cheaper can be used but I already had it) this rifle has about $800 in parts, if you were to buy this complete it would most likely cost well over a $1000.

Heres a few pics
