Default 2005 Cherokee - Needs Head Gasket

So, a good friend at work took her daughter's 2005 Jeep Cherokee to the repair shop they have always gone for years. However, they are being quoted $3,500 to replace the heads gaskets (4.7L V8).

I'm thinking "this price is too ******* high!! (cheap Used Cars quote!!).

So, does anybody know of a good repair shop that specializes or knows these Jeep 4.7 V8's?? She's in Baytown, but location isn't the priority - a good shop that is reasonable is!! Let me know - thanks!!

I don't know of a good shop. I am a ton of Jeep forums and I have heard those are a nightmare to do headgaskets or major engine work on. That quote is still high, but may not be too far off.

lets guess the parts and fluids are $500. Now lets guess their shop rates are $100 per hour. that is 30 hours of work or almost 4 days. Sounds a little heavy on time but I don't know jack about those jeeps.

And hopefully there are no issues with the heads once they are off.

Yeah, just found out that the reason the price was high is because both heads are cracked. Derr......

Call Thunder Bolt or Precision and just see about a new motor.

Even if the heads are bad, that is way overpriced for this type of job. Shop around since you're in Houston and get price comparisons.

I just looked it up in alldata, and it only calls for 10.2 hours to do both sides. At $100 an hour thats still only a grand plus $100 each for the gaskets and a bit more for fluids. $3500 is entirely to much for that job.

Yea I was merely trying to guess as to what they had into the job not justifying it. But now he says the heads are bad.

Also you have to take into account the shop may just not want to do the job. Throw a high number out there and hope they go else were.

Yep, everyone I have run into hates working on those with a passion. They also say the book time is not enough for working on it unless you have a ton of specialty tools for the Jeep specifically. I am not saying that all of the cost is labor. I don't know how much a set of heads are either. Their guy may have worked on one before and knows it is more like a 15 hour job realistically and is not going to take a hit. Anyone who has done warranty work at a dealer knows that the time is not always accurate.
