Where to live in North Houston?

Where to live in North Houston?
I'll be moving to Houston in a few weeks for work. Work is up north, right around the 249 and Sam Houston Tollway intersection.
I'm looking for a nice area, and I don't mind paying a little more to live in a nice neighborhood. I'm looking for an apartment, but it has to be in a secure and relatively quiet area. My job involves a lot of travel, and I want the peace of mind that I won't have any break-ins while I'm away.
As far as distance to work, a 20 minute drive each way doesn't bother me. If you guys can recommend some good complexes, that would be even better. Thanks in advance.

first off steer clear of the 1960/249 area, not good to go there. If your looking to get into a nice one i would look into apartments off fallbrook drive and the beltway. Not bad there or you can go as far as tomball but 249 north past spring sypress the freeway ends and it goes from 5 lanes to 3 and gets backed up. Your best bet would be to get one off louetta and 249. That is the best in the area and not a lot of traffic. There is a target and a few sports bars and you will be right next to vintage park where we have coffee and cars every 1st sat. Of the month.
Hope this helps.

The Woodlands is great too, but it's a good 40 minute drive to 249 and the beltway, without traffic.

I was thinking about the Woodlands as well, but it seems like a longer drive than I'd be happy with. But I'm still open to suggestions, I have yet to search the area. I won't be moving for another two weeks.
Thanks for all the input so far.

Also personal exp at the apt 249/louetta, legacy pine I believe, around $700 for 3rd floor no balcony option(I don't smoke)
Vintage park walking distance, (cars and coffee). Also has nice selection of food.
I just had covered parking at the time, just a daily driver. Think garage is $75

Louetta/249 is a decent area. Avoid FM 1960 at all costs, nowhere near that street. High crime traffic through there.
Woodlands is just a better area entirely. Insurance is also cheaper in the Woodlands, as it is Montgomery county. There is also better night life and social scene in the woodlands.
