Default Title problem, what should I do?

Ok i did a even trade 2 years ago my camaro for a trans am, after a week of owning the trans am the motor died and I was pretty much just ripped off, So the car sat for years and the title with it.. Now I went to go transfer the title into my name since im ready to get the car running and the state wants to charge me $700 and some change.. I don't even have that much money too my name, if I don't figure something out they are going to keep adding on late fees..

Im at a loss, the lady there told me the only thing I could do was "get the seller to state the date was wrong" pretty much hinting at me just falsely filling out a document stating I traded the car recently, But wouldn't they have to look up the cars vin i traded and see its been registered in someone elses name for a long time?

What should I do?

if you work as a title agent, when theres a even trade case, do you look up both cars vins and see what the status is?

I could maybe get a hold of the guy to fill out a statement saying the date was an "error" but when they run my vin wouldn't it show my car was transfer too the new owner 2 years ago?

You are over thinking this. I don't think anyone is going to look that closely at this.

I may be wrong but I don't think that title is tied to your name. I would just say the previous owner never titled the car. You got it as a parts car within the last 30 days.

how would i set that up 1965GP?

I was almost too the point of filing a lost title on it because its been on my property for 2 years and would probably be cheaper.

I don't plan to ever sell the car, i just need it to be legally mine so i can insure it, register and drive it.

Call any title company and you will find that in a trade "Title Only" is just a swap. Now days I would rather just trade than sell a car

I would not recommend doing this. Texas is already the worst when it comes to getting titles. This is a case where less is more, the less info they have, the better off the OP is.

Bottom line, get the guy you traded cars with to sign the proper paperwork and you will be in the clear.

trying to track this guy down i guess..

I have a 130A filled out, the state valued the car at $2700 so if i put that I bought the car instead of traded its going to be like $130 sales tax.

Not saying its right (no worse than agents info) BUT, an even swap trade cost me $5 in TX. The vehicle I got had 2 people on the title. So much crap to sign, they missed one. I wasn't driving 100 miles to get that sig so I fixed it myself.
So yea, just get the date changed.....somehow

$5 sounds alot better then having to take out a loan or open a credit card just to get a title on a car thats worth maybe $500 as it sits.

What would happen if i put this car in a field for 10 years and all those years later decide I want to sell it or fix it, do the DPS really expect me to pay thousands of dollars on a rusty old field car?

Yes, the sad thing is, technically, a vehicle could have more taxes paid on it then it ever sold for new...I.e. everytime its sold taxes are paid

i bought a car from out of state (Fla), and my title came up "missing" while i was over here working, so now i have a car with no title, and no real solution. it changed hands twice before i got it without the proper docs being filled out and i cant get a hold of the owner that is actually on the title

******* bullshit if you ask me.

Just make the corrections on the sellers behalf.....its not like they know what the sign actually looks likes....state employees aren't the smartest bunch so just do whatever you have to do to make the one person happy and you'll get your title.

I see you are in Austin, go to Fry's Title Service it's on the South side but the ladies aren't evil like the DMV. They will hook you up, I have taken several problem titles there and they are very helpful.

what happens is that when he made the trade with u he drop the car off his name.they are charging u that much because i belive you have one month after previous ouwner droped the car off his name after that, theres a monthly fee u have to pay the longer you take to do the titte change the more u pay, what i would do is if u have a buddy with a mecanic shop ,haver them (lie)stating in a paper your car was in thier shop getting repaired..my buddy just when throu this bull **** with the tittles.
