log onto paypal directly from a new browser window by typing

https://www.paypal.com

then change all your information ..

I would also recommend removing your checking account.. A friend of my had this happen, and lost 7k in less than 36 hours . took paypal 2 months to get his money back.

don't wait for them to fix it .. logon and change now .. if you can't get logged in .. call them .. it has already been hacked.

Just make sure to change all your info after you go directly to ebay or paypal's website. Never do it through a link. Ebay/Paypal will NEVER do it through a link. The ones I have been getting lately show that I have bought a high dollar item on Ebay and paid with Paypal. It has a link in the email to click on to dispute the purchase. Don't ever click the link. If your unsure, forward the email to spoof@paypal.com or spoof@ebay.com. They will most likely tell you it did not come from them.

Hold your mouse pointer over the links in the original email, then look in your browser's status bar and see what address is displayed. The phishing emails previously mentioned will commonly have links that appear legit but actually link to different (devious) sites.

NEVER CLICK LINKS IN EMAILS THAT APPEAR TO BE FROM EBAY OR PAYPAL. ALWAYS open a new browser window and manually type the url, login, and check your info.

I just got an email from paypal saying a new address was added to my account. Check out where the links redirect to:

The site that comes up when you click the link looks like PayPal's site, but most certainly is not. If you clicked a link in the email you received, then "logged in" to your account, what actually happened was you filled out a form on their site that sends them your info. It's really quite simple, but the consequences can be horrific.

Now that I look at it more closely, it's even more obviously fake. The phishing email is a plain text message, whereas PayPal sends emails in HTML.

Real PayPal Email:

Their "PayPal" Email:

Notice the difference in the "Protect Your Password" sections? Sneaky bastards.

Copying and pasting the links isn't necessarily bad, but it's best to manually type things in a new window. The links in these emails usually look like the correct ones but actually direct you to different sites (as shown in my previous post). The Live Chat with eBay was most likely legit, but at that point you had already given your info to the darkside which was fast at work destroying your account before eBay could intervene.

If you are ever unsure of an email that appears to be from eBay or PayPal, forward it to spoof@ebay.com or spoof@paypal.com respectively. They will look into it and, in most cases, send you an email thanking you for reporting it. If the email is legit, well I don't know what happens then because I've never forwarded them an email that was really from them, but I assume they would follow up and tell you its real. However, they will probably again suggest to open a new window, etc., etc.

Well, computers have always been one of my strong points. In high school I hosted a fake Yahoo! Mail login page on my personal website to bypass the School's internet filters so that myself and my teachers could check our email. Plus I get 200 - 300 spam messages a day in my oldest account (which happens to be the one I use for eBay and PayPal) that I manually sort and delete, so I have seen, and reported, hundreds of these same emails over the years.

If eBay says it's secure, you're probably good to go. Just keep an eye on your account and a closer eye on your inbox. Hope it works out.
