Default considering a co-op job at Lyondell in Channelview, TX - anyone familiar with them?

Anybody work for Lyondell? They've offered me a 3-semester co-op position at their Channelview facility starting in the fall. I really want to take this for several reasons, just wondering if anybody has any experience with them.

I'm a mechanical engineering major, about to finish my sophomore year. I'll be working this summer at Total Petrochemicals in Port Arthur TX, but it's an "internship" without a definate "we want you for more than 3 months" like Lyondell is offering.

I live outside of Beaumont, about 50 minutes from HRP, but I do plan on getting a place to stay while I'm there so I don't have to drive back and forth. A Baytown apartment would be awesome considering it's right on the other side.

Anybody have any thoughts? 2 job offers after only 2 interviews isn't too shabby if I don't say so myself.

My aunt works for Lyondell out there, has been for a couple years. She wants me to come out there for the same thing at the end of next year.

I worked out there back when I was a pipefitter helper which was about 8 years ago. It's a pretty clean plant...i mean compared to some of the nasty *** plants I've been in.

A good company to work for from what I understand. They make Propylene Oxide out there and Styrene Mononer. I would go for it if I were you. Thats a good sized facility and you will prob. get some good experience.

i can't tell you about that site specifically or what it's like for the engineering, but it is a very good company. I stopped my electrical engineering and am finishing my process technology degree in december. I have an internship with Shell so i'll probably end up there, but Lyondell is definitely one of the companies I would want to work for.

This all sounds like good info! I'm still waiting for their offer letter, so I will have some time even after it gets here. I'm hoping they do some kind of housing allowance or something to that nature. I'll be making plenty of dough, but that's just more I could spend on the crapbox.

No, Lyondell is an american Company and Citgo is a venezuelan company. Lyondell Citgo Refinery is a joint venture (52% owned by Lyondell and 48% owned by Citgo) which operates in the US and receives crude from venezuela.

Does this email have any truth to it? I got this a while back.......just wondering.

Lyondell-Citgo Houston Refinery Offered for Sale

CITGO Petroleum Corporation, a subsidiary of Petroleos de Venezuela, S.A., and Lyondell Chemical Company (NYSE: LYO) today announced the signing of a letter of intent to jointly explore the sale of the Lyondell-Citgo Refining LP (LCR) partnership which operates a refinery in Houston, Texas, with a crude oil processing capacity of 268,000 barrels per day

Venezuela government is sole owner of Citgo gasoline company

Venezuela Dictator Hugo Chavez has vowed to bring down the U.S. government. Chavez, president of Venezuela, told a TV audience: "Enough of imperialist aggression; we must tell the world: down with the U.S. empire. We have to bury imperialism this century."

The guest on his television program, beamed across Venezuela, was Cindy Sheehan, the antiwar activist. Chavez recently had as his guest Harry Belafonte, who called President Bush "the greatest terrorist in the world."

Chavez is pushing a socialist revolution and has a close alliance with Cuban dictator Fidel Castro.

Regardless of your feelings about the war in Iraq, the issue here is that we have a socialist dictator vowing to bring down the government of the U.S. And he is using our money to achieve his goal!

The Venezuela government, run by dictator Chavez, is the sole owner of Citgo gas company.Sales of products at Citgo stations send money back to Chavez to help him in his vow to bring down our government.

Take Action

Please decide that you will not be shopping at a Citgo station. Why should U.S. citizens who love freedom be financing a dictator who has vowed to take down our government?

Very important. Please forward this to your friends and family. Most of them don't know that Citgo is owned by the Venezuela government.

Sounds like a couple facts mixed in with some conspiracy theory. The first part is true (I work for lyondell).

No, they have one refinery together where Lyondell owns like 52% of it, and citgo owns 48%. Lyodell is the 3rd largest chemical conmpany, no one owns them.

I talked to the guy running their "Specialty Engineering Group" friday. His group does work with all kinda stuff, for all the Lyondell plants. He is most likely going to offer me a position with them, but I'm not sure if I want to be that removed from the things. He talked about how they analyze problems and how they have been fixed to help them from not happening in the future. He kept referring to the people who worked directly on the process and its problems as "Fire Fighters".

I've also got an offer to work inside the actual Channelview plant directly working on the process, which I think I like a little better. I'm a really hands on kinda guy.

I will have 3 semesters total to work for them, so I'll be able to do whatever I want.

PS - The project manager sent me a big box of cookies, snacks, candy, pens, pencils, paper, $20 gift card to domino's and a note saying "Good luck on finals!" last week. I opened it and though.. "Hmm, if you think you can entice me with a bunch of free ****................ YOU'RE RIGHT!".
