Default Question about Texas emissions laws

I'm about to move to Texas and I'm interested in finding out what kind of testing is done on OBD I cars. Where I live now they just get a visual and that isn't too hard to get around but I know some places use sniffers on them. Back when I was in Texas (97-01) I didn't know anything about cars/emissions so I figured I'd ask some people that live there now.

It depends where you live in Texas, whether or not you get the sniffer.

I'll be in Ft. Bend county, how do I look up which ones have it and which ones don't? I have a bad feeling that I'll be too close to Houston to not get the sniffer.

I believe that most places do the sniffer, but if you really want to, you can find somebody to put a sticker on it.

College Station is not far from Houston and when I was living in Houston I drove there for inspection. But that may have changed by now because I haven't had my car inspected since July '03.

You can still get your car inspected in B/CS for $12.50 - no sniffer.

I'm pretty sure Fort Bend county requires tailpipe emissions testing for anything pre-OBDII. Just drive out of county to get your car inspected.

You have to get the car inspected in the county that it is registered in. This prevents everyone with a car that won't pass from going to another county. The old inspection sticker on the car will tell the inspection station if you are from a county that requires a emission test.

That is correct sir!
many surrounding counties of a major city will require the same testing as the major city since these drivers will commute. I've got a 91'GMC and it had to pass the sniffer. Just make sure it's tuned-up and get it warmed up good and it should pass!

You're supposed to, but many people never do. That's why everyone in Houston goes to Magnolia or Brazos county.

Well the advantage is the college town, the man at the station said being in a town of temporary citizens there is no rules against inspecting it. Remember most people are not like all of us trying to worm around the laws. I know up here in DFW area I have tried before to go to non sniffer cities and I got the big negative since I was not living in the county.

If you live out of the county they make you sign an affidavit that says you won't take this car into an emmissions county for more than 60 or 90 days per year. Basically if you get busted its your fault then not the inspectors. Thats what I had todo, even though my car is registered in Brazos county.
