I work out here @ ExxonMobil. I am however a project controls planner/scheduler. Operators make about $25-$30 an hour depending on what contractor you are hiring in with and the overtime is pretty good out here depending on what project you are put on. Overtime comes and goes.

You can also try to get on to work as a plant operator offshore on one of the platforms. You still make the money, but you work 2 on 2 off. I don't know what the pay is though. I work in the drilling area, but see our plant operators living the good life out there.

So do you have to know someone to get in as an operator? No certifications needed?

Key to every job is all in who you know or how much you know.

Might want to go to Motiva in Port Authur as we are doing a big project for them and once complete they should add another 300 operators out there. Project is due to be complete 2010 but there hiring wayyyyyyyyy before that to get people trained. Thats where I would start. Also I think there is some operator classes at san jac too.

My bud just got on at Valero starting at $20 or so an hour, he was hired to replace a guy that was retiring. At first he was just unloading LP tanker trucks but now he's on his shift since the guy retired. He got a $2-3 bump in pay & he says he loves it. Only thing is he goes from nights to days every other week I think & hates having to constantly change/adjust. He didn't know anyone but got an associates from a community college.

Some plants hire you with just the certification. Some only accept the 2 year degree. Actually, a lot of plants are requiring the 2 year degree and some are even moving over to this. There are those rare occassions that you can get on by just knowing someone.

Lee college in Baytown has a good program.... and its just down the street from exxon. ITs kinda hard to get a job if your green outta school and know no one. I did an intern program with Jacobs/JE Merit where i worked full time and they paid for school etc. IT was a good program, but i chose the wrong craft and it wasnt for me (i wasnt allowed to do the operator program)... but theres LOTS of money to be made out there!

My plant has 3 requirements, and you must meet 1 of them to be considered:

1. Have 3 yrs experience
2. 2 yr Assoc. degree in Process Tech.
3. Any Bachelors degree

Inspector12---you are the 1st person i have ever heard of that prefers the 4on4off schedule to the dupont. if you take 4 days off with your week off you get 13 days off. and you get 9 more weekends off /yr with the dupont schedule
