I have yet to find someone post that they hate their job. I think everyone loves their job that's why it's so hard to get into a postion. These people are keeping their jobs for 25+ years. I mean really you don't need advancement when your making 60-100k depending on how much overtime you get. The starting base pay is good enough for most people I would think. I'm sure the job does get boring and times but the pay, benefits, and amount of time off (your work about half the month) outweigh the boredness. This all from what I have read on forums and a couple of people who are currently operators.
Aggie...you are partially wrong. There are boring times, but it's not a bad boring. I'd rather be bored in a refinery as opposed to busy fighting a unit upset. Also, depending on the facility, there are plenty of
advancement opportunities. In a very small facility, sure, the ladder is short.
For the amount of work that we do and the amount of off time we have, operators are generally pretty happy.
I know plenty of people with advanced degrees who don't come close to making what we make.
