Default best way to keep crankshaft from turning?

when installing a harmonic balancer? I know of the screwdriver in the flexplate trick but that seems a lil flimsy to me for a torque to yield crank bolt. how did you guys do it?

If it's a 6spd just put it in 4th gear.

If it's an auto - you can buy a tool that screws in place of the number 1 spark plug and holds the engine.

Edit: If you do the 4th gear part - Make sure that the parking brake is set and use some blocks and jack stands.

Engine is on the engine stand. Thx for all the responses guys. I've got a prybar; hopefully it will be big/long enough.
