Default Best shielding gas for miggin SS

Im trying to purge the pipe with 100% argon and mig with the same 100% but for some reason I keep getting un unclean weld... The purging makes no difference as far as quality! should I up to a tri-mix? Welds look good just a nasty black resuide from the arc and for good penetration the wire speed is damn slow, wondering if the helium with help with the penetration and cleanliness of the weld?

Were are you welding it at....outside? the black on the welds would be from insufficient gas...if there is a winddraft...even a small one it would do that....i always run 75/25 on all mine and seems to work well

its tecnitcally only mig if its an inert gas... mix and co2 is technically a mag weld, since its an active gas (Metal Inert Gas, versus Metal Active Gas welding....)

Tri-mix using 90% helium, 7.5% Argon and 2.5% co2. Bets gas to use for short circuit mig welding of stainless steel.
With mild steel you can use either straight co2 or do a 75%/25%. The straight c02 will have more BB's and not have the greatest weld bead appearance.

right now im using 98 percent argon 2 percent oxygen and it seems to be working well wire speed is still on the slow side but the bead has flattened out nicely. the 2 percent oxygen really helped with the flow as opposed to the 100 percent argon i was using. also a lot less clean up post weld. Think i found a happy medium im sure the tri mix would be even nicer but they only sell that at my supply store in monsterious tanks.

That gas would be considered more for a spray tranfer which explains the nicer bead appearance and you should see less spatter. The addition of the oxygen is what "wets" the puddle out.
The tri mix would give you a good weld but have more spatter.

thanks but my question is since i have a full tank of tri mix for stainless steel can i use it also on mild steel? If not what do i need to use cause i need a gas for aluminum also. thanks for the info.

You'll need argon for aluminum. Read thru the posts, I posted what is needed for mild steel.

Mig Welding
Aluminum - 100% (Argon)
Mild Steel - 75/25% (Argon/Co2)
Stainless Steel - 90/8/2% (Helium/Argon/CO2) Typically - but there are other combos
Tig Welding
Aluminum, Mild Steel, Stainless Steel - 100% Argon

I have a mig and tig welder and i use both. well thanks alot that clears up everything. thats good you can use straight argon for tigging all. Also what about chrome moly?? tigging what gas. thanks againg guys
