Default Anyone else buy new tools and instantly modify them for "improvement"?

Just made an autozone run for a 17mm socket. I was an idiot and used regular bolts on my pressureplate. Once the locktite dried it had couldn't get them off worth a damn. Not to mention the bolt heads where way to big. So i bought the socket and grided the **** out of it to make it thinner. $5 tool so not to bad.

When i got my new miller tig the first thing i did was chop off the outlet plug! Standardizing everything to Hubble connectors.

What have you guys done?

Haha whenever i buy tools i leave them how they are in case they have to be replaced later, craftsman = lifetime warrenty. I have thought about doing what you did to the socket though.

I only really do it when its necessary. I've also done it on brand new and used parts i've bought. First couple of times its nerve wrecking. But once you've done it and see everything will work out theres no second thought.

this is where the tools from harbor freight/ollies/etc.... come in handy.
I have alot of wrenches that i chopped down to fit into tighter spots, and a couple of home made crows feet using the ends of wrenchs welded to an old crappy extension that wont hold sockets anymore. I could NEVER cut up my good tools Snap On/Craftsman lol.

Yea i wouldn't touch tools from a nice set, usually an odd ball, or i'll buy a second one to modify. I had to pull my motor last weekend and it was do or die kind of deal. Although i've been disappointed with crasftsman tools latly. I've also read their lifetime warrenty isn't so lifetime anymore.

Lifetime is still intact. The store is only a call away instead of spreading wrong rumors. I blued my brand new 20 volt lithium impacts 1/2 inch drive, does that count?

Not trying to spread rumors, its what i've read online while looking for a torque wrench. Their lifetime does not apply to torque wrenches i guess.

I had a set of the first craftman pro series wrenches and after 10 years i ground the head down on one wrench and found out that they stopped making my style. the new one is close but the writing is upside down.

When I was racing my Pontiac motor, to get to one of the header bolts, we had to heat up and bend a open ended wrench almost 90 degrees and grind down the edges tto get it to fit.

When I sold the car, I brought it back to Sears and they gave me a new one! LOL
