Question GM Tools in Helms Manual

Anyone know where we can get these things?

Specifically, I'm looking at the flexplate holding tool - J42386-A

A lot of the time you will find a picture in the
manual that shows you enough to make your
own. Like when I rebuilt a TH350 the book was
all about GM tool this and GM tool that, but it
turned out I was able to do all of the fancy
stuff with a piece of threaded rod and some
bar stock cut to specific length and tapped
at the center point. Doesn't hurt to try, if you
have the basics. Be inventive!

Good point from Jimmy.

The flex/fly holder is a toothed pad that sits on a pedastal that mounts to the 15mm starter bolts.

I have a junk starter that probably could be welded to not move come to think of it.

Umm, bro. Be inventive? Please!

Pulled everything but the stock short block out of my car with basic hand tools... don't need a lecture on that subject...

I think that tool would make changing pulley a 1000 percent easier than the old screwdriver in the flexplate method.

Price of the tool will help me decide what which way I want to go.

I have all the GM specialty tools for the LS1 and they do come in very handy. $$$, but handy. The flywheel holding tool is ~$45-50.

You might try your local dealership if you can trust them. You might try here:

I made one out of a piece of angle iron. When I first made it, my tranny was out of the car. The next time I went to use it, it was on a car that had a tranny installed and the tool hit the bell housing so I had to do a little cutting and grinding on it to make it fit. Here is a pic.

Yeah the tool is like $45. Try finding a junk starter and make it so the innards don't spin.

I have the complete LS1 tool kit which has the j42386 flywheel holder, but it will not work if the tranny is still bolted to the engine. If you look in the 2000 service manual it shows two different flywheel holders, J39411 & J42386. Maybe the J39411 will work with the tranny bolted up.
