Anyone have a good way to organize sockets? I bought a set of the organizers from sears that has the pins you pop into the boards, but those things are worthless. Didn't have enough pins for the sockets and they don't sell extra pins. I saw some other trays/holders, but I would be spending close to $100 to get enough for all my sockets.
Right now I'm planning on taking a 2 x 4, ripping it to 3/4 x 3 1/2, drilling some holes in it, cutting some dowels and putting them in the holes. I'll take a label maker and print off the sizes for easy recognition.
Anyone have a better way to do it?

I went to sears and bought the foam pads that you trace around your tools and cut on the lines. Works better for me than the clips. I just had to cut the holes slightly smaller than the actual sockets. I took a silver sharpie and marked the sizes on the black foam, and I think it looks great. ![Happy](https://ls1tech.com/forums/images/smilies/LS1Tech/gr_stretch.gif)

Here is what I have
http://www.sears.com/sr/javasr/produ...id=00933932000
3 for metric, 3 for SAE (have a 6 point, 12 point and misc set of each) and they work GREAT, I would buy them again in a heartbeat.

Yep, I like the magnetic holders from Lisel. On one side they hold shallow well. On the other,,, they hold deep wheel. One great thing about them is that you can pick them up and take them with you if need be.

I'll check around home depot and lowes for just some foam sheets like that. Probably be able to find them in bigger sheets and cheaper. Those would also be good for all my handtools, make it easy to see if I'm missing anything. Also, for christmas I got a label maker, so I could use them on the foam for really quick identification of all sizes.
I like the Hansen holders, but would need so many of them.

If you go this route, cut the holes for the sockets smaller or they will not fit tight. If you use it for wrenches, cut all the way through the foam. Then, take the part that you cut out and cut it in half. This will allow the wrench/pliers/etc... to sit slightly inside the foam, but still stick out above the foam, making them easier to pick up.

I agree, I have had every other kind and gave them away. Those trays are the best hands down.

Yeah but all of my taller drawers are packed full and the smaller drawers in my tool cabinets are not that tall. i suggest the 1.xx specials at sears that have the long piece of metal with the small metal brackets. just pop em on and then lay em sideways in the box. they work great for me. Plus if they get worn down and wont hold the socket all the way on and keep slipping off, just slide a screwdriver in the middle and pry both ways and they widen back up.
Just my suggestion.

How many many inches long is the longest pin, from the bottom of the tray to the top of the pin.

It allows me to store my sockets in shallow drawers ... I have a LOT of more shallow drawers than I do deeps ...
