Default First Matco Experience...

I decided to try my student discount from Matco instead of paying the local Snap On guy full retail for his stuff as well as putting up with his MASSIVE EGO....

I ordered the 3/8" metric socket set for my winter car project , Knipex 7" Cobras, Knipex 10" spring loaded Cobras, jaw protectors for the 10" and hose clamp pliers. They shipped out this morning and arrived this evening (except the sockets are on backorder). That's the fastest I've ever received a package.

I guess they'll get my business for 1/4" torque wrench, 76 piece tap and die set, some ratchets and probably a box. It would be kind of stupid for me not to buy what I need while most of it is 52% off.

Those Nipex are the best damn pliers ever. I'd never even think of getting a pair of channel locks!

Yeah, a buddy of mine used to be a Snap-On guy and that was the only way I could afford all the tools. The freebies were nice too

Good to hear you received great service from them. There's a guy down the street that has a Matco truck, I should check it out.

Yeah, I already had one pair of Knipex pliers that have the smooth jaw. They are awsome and sold me on the Knipex name. It's surprising how many people I know that have never even heard of them.

That is the Votech discount they offer. I've not got any Mac except for an old open end wrench my grandpa passed down, so I can't offer any fair comparison. My collection is 60% Snap On and 40% Craftsman.

I bookmarked the Mac site last year before they started restructuring it. I just tried my bookmark and found that it still shows pricing. Check it out and maybe it is what you are looking for:

http://www.mactools.com/default.aspx

I saw your other post. What kind of school are you in? Are you sure you aren't eligible for the Votech program? Our Matco Votech rep told me to go ahead and register under their online Votech link, fill out a survey which would get me another 10% off beyond the 52%. That's what I did any way.

We deal with both Matco and Snap-On. Our Snap-On guy goes on multiple weeks haitus of seeing us, even though we are good for $300-500 a week he just disappears and doesn't show up. Just in my shop, I can count $30000 in JUST tool boxes (Paid cash). Not to mention what's filled inside. The guy is an idiot for not coming every week, and Snap-On corporate are a bunch of idiots also.

The new Matco truck we have coming around, comes every week Friday @ 3pm. He's an awesome guy to deal with and the tools are pretty good/warranteed. He also will cut deals on certain tools, unlike Snap-On vendors think their worth their weight in gold times 20.

It gets my goat that Snap-On is "too big" to deal with myself and our friend's shop next door. He just bought a 22000 dollar tool box that is all fucked up from the factory. They sent him new drawers and our Snap-On guy was supposed to put them in, since he got the drawers he is a no-show.

Weird. The link definitely works for me. If I hover the mouse over the words on the left, it branches out and I can pick from those items.

That sounds like the same deal to me. The 52% covers the stuff I want anyway (ratchets, wrenches, sockets, boxes).

I don't know what Snap On's votech discount is, but when I started 15 months ago, they supposedly had an A&P basic set, a small roll cabinet that I could buy, but they both had a point value (i.e. set=6 points, box=5 points,etc...) then I could only pick a small selection past that up to a set point limit. Our Snap On guy was also going to charge us a freight and delivery fee on all that. I bought a 1/2" electronic torque wrench from him, but bought my sockets, ratchets, wrenches etc... from the snap on website just to avoid him. I will say I wouldn't give up my Snap On combination wrenches for the world. They also have 2 local plants and some of the workers are my dad's patients, so I will definitely support Snap On even if it's just throught internet orders. Oh, and Shamrock seems like a pretty cool guy too and has always given me any help I needed.

i agree with the corporate snap on idiot thing. i only dealt with them cuz they were the only truck that showed up at my shop. well i moved out by cleveland now, and i get mac matco cornwell and snap on. i hate snap on all in all now, the corporate people the dousche bad dealers they have, and their customer support. when my box is paid off, i am trading it in on something or a different name. I personally only deal with my matco man. he works hella deals made a hell of a good first impression and is everything i would look for in a tool dealer, but not dipping out early, but showing up religiously every week at the same time, and all in all just caring about the tools and the customers that buy them. Also matco stuff can be had for a hundred or so cheaper than the snap on and mac stuff.

Quick question on the Matco Votech program, when you order, what do they do to verify you're a votech student? Or do they even?

I've used Matco since the late 90's and love their stuff. It's cheaper than Snap-ons overpriced junk and pretty well made. I have a couple deep well swivel 3/8"dr socket sets and a few impact socket sets of theirs. Never had one break or crack as opposed to Snap-On and Mac.
