Default Tips on welding aluminized steel

Anyone have any tips? I've looked for some 5" mild steel u-bends and can only find aluminized ones.

I cannot find any U-bends in mild steel, but there are all kinds of places that make them in 90 elbows. I am sure one of these places can make you a 180.

Edit: Here is a place that does custom bending up to 8" pipe. Just tell them what you want and get a quote.

For best results, try your best to get the aluminumized coating off. I'd use a sanding disc, not a hard grinding disc.

Use a flap disc to grind it off....then you are welding mild steel.

Grind off the galvinize coating , bevel the ends ,fit it up , tack it up ,start welding. I weld with a stickrod[ 6010/ then 7018 ] at work ,a mig would be cleaner .

Use a mig welder.

I didn`t even think about it till I saw this thread, but my exhaust was aluminized steel. When I welded it together I did no surface prep oh well it didn`t seem to hurt anything. I scuffed the edges with a scotchbrite pad and fired up the mig. I didn`t have any problems so as long as you clean the aluminized coating off you should end up with great welds.

18 gauge tube and you are going to try and root with 6010? Why in the world would you do that? 6010 is a digging rod. If you used an arc electrode just run it out with 3/32" 7018. The simple and better way is to use a mig or tig if you have one. 1/16" filler rod for tig and run the temp down to about 10 amps higher than your first amperage where a pool forms.

man you use a 6010 on 18 guage you will cut threw the metal. 7018 will be good and it look nicer than that violent 6010. that rod is a deep penetration rod for thick metal. I can cut threw 1/2' steel plate with that 6010. U will be better off using a mig welder anyway

Hmm, that place looks like a good source for custom BBC turbo headers.

if you got a sand blaster , it would make quick work of the aluminum coating.. if you got a mig i dont think id even bother unless its real thick or giving a crappy weld. .. i just mig'd a peice of stainless to my aluminized x pipe.worked great.

Just sanded the coating off. O

n my old car I had a shop weld my exhaust, before I knew how to weld. It was aluminized steel and I am pretty damn sure they did not take off the coating and it held on well, had the car for two years until I sold it.

Make sure to wear a mask.
