Who makes a good but not super expensive kit for porting and polishing??

Anyone that has done this them selves any input on what you used would be great.

Thanks

Heads and TB want different things.

TB I used a drum sander in an electric drill, not much to take
out and all accessible.

Heads I used a dirt cheap electric die grinder ($10 + ship off
eBay) and one long shank tulip burr (ditto). I didn't bother with
polishing in either case but I did hand-finish the TB with 200
and 600 grit inside (outside is stock appearing).

Place called "roughstuff" I saw had nice variety of porting
stuff but point is you need much less than that for a home
porting project.

A porting and polishing kit doesn't mean anything if you don't know how to do it. Just cleaning up the runners and chambers really doesn't do anything.

The problem is, it isn't how good they look to the eye, its where you grind, and take material away from the runners. If you had access to a flow bench, then I would say give it a shot. Start with one runner, flow it and see what happened. Go to the next, and try something a little different. Probably the single most thing that someone inexperienced with heads can do is get a really good valve job. That will probably be the biggest difference someone can make on a budget. Remember, the more angles the better. You want the valve seat to feel like a smooth radius when done.

Yeah porting a head without a flow bench is a big waste of time.

I use the Standard Abrasives Deluxe kit for porting. It's designed for a 1/4" die grinder. Check Summit Racing's website.

For beginners, I would agree. But experienced porters know where to cut, and where not to. Not to mention that there are a few programs out now that help out with showing you where to cut.

There are tons of threads about home porting on this site. You can 100% get gains from following the guidelines listed here. Using a flow bench can tell you what gains you have achieved. It does mean little if you dont understand the reasons why you are where you are. To really do a good job you need advice from a person in the know. You also need a machinist that understand what valve backcuts and valve seat angle work for what you are doing. I would say to use a practice set first and go from there. If it is your first time, dont expect to be at the level to put on your car. Feel free to shoot me an specific questions via pm. I used to do heads as a side business.

inst the basic idea to make the port basically straighter and smother to flow more are at a hire velocity right ? cuz the ports are kinda like a little 90 degree pipe and you want it to be as smooth as possible flowing thro it right ?
