Default Please educate me about OBD II scanners!

Please educate me! I’m considering buying an OBD II Scan tool but not unfamiliar with what all options are needed or nice to have. What are the differences between the three Snap-on models: SOLUS, Vantage PRO and ETHOS and the one way out of my price range the MODIS. There are a few other models that I was looking at first of which was the OTC Genisys and MAC Mentor. Which looks to be made by the same company. Is one better than the other? Also what exactly does a graphing scanner allow you to do? Then as far as software and attachments, what is important to know or have? I would like to be able to hook-up to domestic and foreign vehicles all types of years. Sorry for all the questions but I’m uneducated when it come to this. I was debating to put this under PCM Diagnostics and Tuning or Tools and Fabrication so if it needs to be moved let me know.

Thanks
Justin

What are you trying to do with the scanner? For me, it was to diagnose my swap and see/clear the codes. (I also wanted to be able to use it on my other cars.) The answer was the $140 scanner at HF that was on sale at $79 and with a coupon got down to $65.

Works perfectly.

Good luck.

I've used the Snappy modis which is a very nice tool but as you said can be pricey. I've also used the solis, aka "the brick" and don't like it. Buttons are kinda weird and it is also very very slow with refreshing data and graphing.

I think the Genisys is a great tool for the money, and would be the one I'd buy if I needed it (I work for Mercedes and they have these $20K touch-screen computers.) It's easy to use, fast refresh rate, and has more functions then you'd probably ever need.
