Default 1/2" Impact Wrenches

It seems like the prices of these 1/2" impact wrenches varies quite a bit. Some are around $80, some are $500. Realistically though, what is a good ft-lb rating and price range for a home-use autmotive 1/2" impact? I know that some of the more expensive ones are lightweight and industrial quality, but I only need one that will be used occasionally. What is the max torque usable on our cars?

I use the IM5100 available from Snap-On. It's probably a little overkill for your use requirements though. You should be fine with something available from Sears or Harbor Freight.

I found a husky impact wrench with 275 ft lbs at Homedepot, it also came with a case, a few cheapy sockets, and a free 3/8" air rachet for $60. It's the same impact wrench they sell for $60 by itself.

For at home I would definitely get a very inexpensive one. I have a CP(Chicago Pneumatic) for at home and is excellent for anything on a car or light truck. My bad *** stuff at work only brakes **** at home.

All air tool ratings are at 90psi. ... We all know these things run well up around 150! ... just call yourself a professional and it'll be ok.

I would recommend the I/R 2131(think thats the 1/2 #, I got both 3/8 & 1/2)
They are the composite plastic cased impacts.
Very light, quiet & powerful, 600 ft lb .
I've had mine for 4 years & counting no problems yet & used often.

I ended up buying an 425 ft-lb Ingersol Rand one off of Harbor Freight. It was on sale for $105, free shipping. Should be good enough for what I'll be doing. Thanks for the replies though!

Here is the one I bought: http://www.harborfreight.com/cpi/cta...emnumber=32431

And to think, I get by with my $30 Campbell-Hausfield special. Actually, I have two of them, a backup in case one breaks down.

IR 231 or 244 is a great, powerful impact at a great price. If you're in a neighborhood though, and work on your car late, those impacts are LOUD as hell, as are the Snap On IM6100 and similar.

THe IR 2131 QT (the "quiet" version of the composit 2131) is the gun to have. The only downside is that it sucks a lot of air, and if you have a smallish compressor (under 5hp and 60 gallons) it will run out of air rather quickly.

Nice choice!! I'm in the process of getting another gun myself as well. I'm going with the new IR 2135 Titanium model for 259. I currently have the IR 2131 for over 7 yrs now and it never failed me to date - just getting old and want something more powerfull..

Yeah the 2135 came out TWO FREAKIN WEEKS after I got my 2131

Worst part is I bought the 2131 because I was having elbow problems, and the heavy 231 that I was using killed me. I had to literally hold the gun with two hands after mabey two wheels. The lighter 2135 would have been ideal, but the 2131 is still really really light, and most importantly, balanced. The Ti is an awsome gun though, forgot all about it. There is a local tool store here selling the Ti's (members price) for $209!!!! Same damn thing I paid for my QT. Oh well, I'm happy

I recently got an IR 2135Ti....My big 'ol CP impact finally gave out. This new one seems to be about half the weight. I havent used it much yet but seems like a really nice piece.... especially for only $200! (I got a buddy-deal)

I've got to swap blades on my bush-hog this weekend, so it's gonna get put to the test soon.
