AAA will only issue check to body shop
I was in a front end collision and got quoted $3800 from the adjuster. They told me they only issue the checks to the body shop I choose. I plan on selling the car as-is and keeping the check, so how do I get them to pay me directly?

You got the check to them because you dont own the car. if you are the only person on the title and dont have any payments you can get the check. When you go with an insurance provider and they ask if there is a co owner or your bank on the title you could say no and then they will make the check out to you.....

I plan on keeping the car now. $3800 should be plenty to get all the parts I need and have everything painted. I'm going to get a used Formula bumper, driver's side fender, and driver's side headlight assembly. If anyone has any clues where I can get these parts that would help a lot. I don't mind having them painted, but black would be awesome. I'm also going to get a WS6 hood from Tru Fiber and replace the T/A wing with a Formula wing. I then will only need a new radiator. No big deal. Should also have some money left over for drag radials and a 3200 stall...

What I was trying to say and you should look into it is, When you started your policy they ask you if you own the car. The common thing to say is yes so they put that down. If you answer the correct way it would be that the bank owns it and your name and there name are both on the pink. If you tell them that there is a co owner/the bank they make the check out the the auto shop vs you. I at least know that this is how Geico does it.

On The Tree
The insurance company is protecting the financial interest of your bank, since they are co-owner of your car. You can request AAA to issue the check to you and your loan company and just have them sign over the check to you---but they may want to make sure you fix the car. Either that, or find a shop that can fix it for less than the estimate that the wrote and have them give you the remaining funds.

Legally in California they have to cut you a check ONLY IF YOU OWN THE CAR.
You don't own the car, the bank does and this is the reason banks make you take out full coverage on the car so that their investment is protected (as was already said).
A shop is not going to take the check and hand it to you even for a fee. Too many red flags, they have to show where the money went to an insurance company...

Thanks. I'm torn between fixing the car and buying a '62 Nova now. It has a built 355 with heads, cam, and dumped H-pipe. Loud as **** and smog exempt. 3600 stall. Runs 12's, but he's including an intake manifold and cam that would put it in the 11's. It also has shitty BFGoodrich drag radials on it, so there's lots of room to improve.

Made a final decision. I'm going to sell my T/A as is, close out the loan, and buy my friend's 2000 Z28 for $5500 (yes, you read that correctly). Under 50k miles. It's got a brand new forged motor with heads & cam. New clutch. Everything else is stock.
