Default New car OIL question

I'm about to change the oil in my 2011 regal. I bought some GC 5-30 and a mobil element. Well I started reading that gm is requireing the use of a certain oil on new cars.? It's has to be dexos1 approved WTF is this I looked for the symbol or the wording on the bottle. I am going to be keeping my own oil change records and recepts just incase. But the thing that worrys me is if your engine fails and you don't have proof your fucked. Soooo anyone know what oils are approved? Thanks and sorry for spelling errors haha it's late and I'm thumbing it on the iPhone

Here you go, some reading, this site is good for oil questions.

You might have to hit up a dealership for the oil not sure if this rating has hit the shelf since it appears to be a new GM standard for model year 2011.

Thanks. I think that's one of many i've read earler but it dosnt say which ones are approved. It seems as if maybe you can get it at the dearlership but then again in the manual it says filled with mobil 1 from the factory which is gm 4718m but the dexos is supposed to surpass that?

Yeah I can look it up but it will be Monday before I have access to a computer where I can find that out. Possibly for now they are leaving it at something easy for people to access until they change the system over the end of this year. If they put mobil1 I would say replicate that they cannot claim any harm done if you used what came from GM.

Because the dexos1 standard is so new the only oil approved so far is Mobil 1 5W-30. Stick with that and return the castrol. And GC only exists as a 0W-30, anything else is regular Syntec

Thanks. I ment 0-30 but was thinking what the car called for was 5-30. It says in the manual you can use o-30 but I took it back and traded for 5-30M1 full synethic. I figured the car was made in Germany so I would put some good German oil in it lol

Wrong. Mobil 1 5/30 is the only oil that has purchased the license. Castrol Edge 5/30 and 5/20, as well as Syntec 5/30 and 5/20, have passed all the dexos1 tests and guarantee performance in a dexos1 motor.

You're still gonna need to return your oil if its GC 0/30 though, then turn around and get some M1 or Edge.
