Default First time to west. safe to drive into Mexico?

Hey guys my buddy got a job for the Diamondbacks and I am going out there to visit. I've never been out west before. I'm staying in Tucson and noticed some nice looking beaches in Mexico like puerto penasco was only four hours away. Is it safe to drive there? Everyone around here thinks I'm crazy with this idea. Would I be better off just driving to California?

Edit: I will not be in the T/A but in a rental car therefore will not be able to out run any mexican mobs.

Should be ok ,you might pass military check points wich is a good sign
but its always better to drive with someone who knows the area or at
least speaks spanish. Lot of hot chicks at Puerto Peñasco!

Not worth it at all if you dont know the area. There have been over 20k deaths due to the drug war in the past few years. I see you are from NJ so you dont know much about mexico at all, if you do go fly into a resort town. I wouldnt drive into there unless you have friends familar with the area.

I wouldn't go back to Mexico if somebody paid me. It's filthy, trashy, and filled with drugs and violence.

If you plan on driving four hours from Tucson, just head west and go to the beaches in Southern Cali.

I never want to go to Mexico again. When you have to pay $16 for a hamburger to not get food poisoning, not travel at night, be cautious in the daytime, can pay the police to make them go away, and not make any friends to avoid being mugged, I'd say that place sucks.

Find me a $16 hamburger and a whole police force that takes bribes in SB...

i lived in Phoenix for about 10 years,,although i knew some folks would frequent Rocky Point with no problems,,i wouldn't go down there if you paid me. there is just to much that we hear/read about that isn't good,,you are basically on your own if you go down there,,,if something happens to you, no one is coming to get you. its a crap shoot. i'm just not willing to take that gamble.
