Default Honest opinions of Race Prep in Bermuda Dunes, CA

I'm going to be doing a head/cam swap soon on my '99 Z28, and after that, plan on getting it tuned. I've been reading around for the best place to get it dyno tuned, and narrowed it down to two places: Synergy, and RAce Prep. I would love to go to synergy, but the drive for me is about 8 hours long, and I just can't do that. Race-prep, however, is less than 20 minutes from where I live. The only problem is, I've heard some serious horror stories of people who have gone to them, and had troubles afterwards. They're coming from a very reliable source, but I'd like to get this boards' opinion of them. I've searched, and found a few threads, but I still figured it would help if started my own.

And race prep, feel free to comment in here, I'm willing to listen to what anyone has to say.

Do you mean this Race-Prep? I can't vouch for their work, but they seem very knowledgeable on the Gen III/IV platforms.

Hello,
I am sorry to say I know exactly who these people are and they have been trying to bad mouth us as much as possible and we really don't even know why! The real sad part of this is that we tried to help these two individuals out with their cars and eventually made them some of the fastest cars out in our area for very little money! Shows what you get for being the nice guy... I can honestly say that there was NOTHING done wrong to their parts and everything that leaves our shop is PERFECT or it does not leave. I know how the rumor mill starts, but I need to defend my company here, there was never anything done wrong they simply decided they didn't like us for some reason, not to mention if something was wrong wouldn't you bring it back to get fixed for free? I sure would, and we have never seen anything from them...

Please feel free to give us a call for pricing and such for your car, I can assure you it will be done right!

I have yet to go there for tuning but will within the next month. I have been treated professionally by Bryan.

My opinion is this:
Race-Prep's labor prices are higher than non-specialist shops and they don't budge much, if at all, from their price. In my eyes, this is the sign of a reputable shop that knows their work, knows what it takes to get the job done right, and won't lowball you to get you in the door. You get what you pay for.

Their fault seems to be they did a favor for someone and they forgot that no good deed goes unpunished.

If you have specific examples of their failures, post them and let them be defended. Otherwise, drop the innuendos and heresay.

The only way to get something done right is to do it yourself. I wouldn't pay someone to work on my car but thats just me

The only other people I Trust with any of my cars beside's myself, Are the Guys at Race-Prep...Hands down!! They really know what there talking about, they had no problems answering all the questions I had when it was time to have the V tuned. I wasn't about to have any so called wannabee tuner mess with a my New $50,000 car. They had no problem with getting me 20rwhp more, with nothing more then a tune on a stock car..paper filter and all. I now have more than 2000 miles on the car after the tune and its running like a dream no problems what so ever, just a ton more power on tap now.

Remember you get what you pay for! Cheaper is not always better!
HP=$$$$$ its just a matter of how fast you want to go.

bryan, you should know that if i wanted to bad mouth you guys you wouldnt have half the business with ls1's that you do now. and ill say exactly what i say to everyone that asks me and that is that as far as your your porting and building motors you do a great job but i wasnt happy with the tune especially after tad deleted the torque man. without at least telling me first. and every time i stop the car died. now you know what i say. and as far as Ry's car you didnt do **** to it besides the heads.

I dont take my car to shops but if I did it would prob be a&a corvettes or race-prep, and I wouldnt listen to a couple unhappy customers versus 100 happy ones. Usually the people who keep badmouthing shops are involved with other shops and cant get over past mistakes. Every shop in Los Angeles has had issues with customers and alot of shops are wayyyyy worse than race-prep. jmho

Thanks for the replys everyone. I'd tune it myself but don't know anything about EFI, so that's outta the question.

Thanks for the input, though. Food for thought.

Want to learn about EFI?

With LS1Tech and other forums on the internet, unless time is a problem there really is no reason not to tune your own car. Cause it is time intensive, done right.

I'm 110% Confident in Race-prep. I probably owe them the wellbeing of my engine to tell you the truth. Bryan and his team are very professional, knowledgable... expensive but that's worth it for what you get in my eyes. They're an awesome group and ya know, even though I've heard all this stuff about the other guys, I know Race-prep is more than capeable of taking care of me through whatever I need to do. Oh yah, and Tad's GREAT tuner, hands down.

EDIT: Any online guides to basic EFI? Literature I could read? I really don't have the spare time to attend classes right now.

Just start reading some threads in the tuning section. The FAQs and stickies have most of the information that would be useful. Or if you're ever in San Diego look me up.
