I just put it in last night, runs good. I can already tell it cut down the engine noise. I changed from mobil 1 5w30.

I've heard of "German Castrol Syntec 0w30," and that it's the best, but too hard to find and expensive when you do, unless you get lucky...

I agree. Its like the hot item anyone can afford. I'm sure people put it down in their list of mods.

The 40 Weight is thicker than the 30 weight, thats why it cuts down on the noise a bit. The downside is that it doesnt flow as well through oil passages as a thinner oil.

The internet rumor is that Mobil 40 weight is more like a 30 weight in other brands of oil.

The 0w, 5w, and 10w part refers to the viscosity when cold. Once warmed up it will act as the viscosity of the second number ie 40 or 30.

Also, one company's 5w-30 can be thicker or thinner than another's 5w-30. Just like two tires rated at 300AA can have completely different tread life. The prime example of this is GC 0w-30 is thicker than M1 5w-30, as GC acts as something closer to M1's 40w when hot. This is why it tends to quiet down the motor in some people's cars.

I just changed from mobil 1 5w-30 to 0w-40. Car felt considerably slower (thicker oil), but oil is there for one purpose, PROTECTION.

Your car will not be noticeably slower. That's a complete illusion. We're talking fractions of horsepower sacrificed with a thicker oil, and by thicker we're talking a very small difference.
