Arrow What Size To Go With? 275 vs. 285 in a 17" rim

I am still debating whether to go with 275/40/17s or 285/40/17s all around on my 9.5" rim????

I love Nittos, always ran Nittos never once had a problem. I have been running Nittos since 2000..

or...

Should I maybe try BF Goodrich g-Force T/A KDW NT? the biggest size they have in a 17" tire is 275/40....

So let hear your opinions

I went with OEWheels provided Nexen N3000's in 275/40/17 all around. I had the same size tires on my last wheels and loved the way it handled. I would think 285's would be similar but I've heard about fatter tires in the front catching grooves and plus they're (a little) heavier. I don't have the kind of power to make 275's useless so it was an easy decision. There's my .02

I'm running 275/40/17 GSD3's on the front of my Z28 and 285/40/17 GSD3's on the rear. I like it and you can tell the back is a tad wider by how the tire sits on the rim. These are on SS 10 Spokes.

Hey man i went from BF Goodrich g-Force T/A KDW (old tread) 275/40/18 on all 4 corners on some 18.9.5 rims to Nitto's NT-05 275/35/18 on the same rims. If you go with Nitto do yourself a favor and get the 285's, they do run narrower than others. I personally do not like the tread on the KDW NT's.

I'm mot sure how 285s will look on the front. May be too wide looking. I like 275 front and 285 rear.

stick with 275s. Price for performance just isnt there to bother going to 285s even just for the rear. Stick with the nittos.

I have BFG KDW 275 front and 285 rear. Honestly you cant tell the difference in width, and its a pain in the *** not being able to rotate them front to rear, cause they are directional. I got a good deal on them so i bought them, but when they wear out, i'll be going 275 all the way around. I'm pretty sure there are no KDW 285's anymore anyway.

My 275's in the front grab ruts in the road bad enough, i can only imagine 285's would be worse yet.

FYI, tire width isn't the the only factor involved in performance tires tracking road imperfections. Tread pattern, tire design, and your front-end alignment also have a noticeable effect. One tire I would avoid that I found that totally sucks on less then perfect roads is the Pirelli PZero Rosso Asimmetrico, great handling otherwise, and it runs really narrow.

IMO, go wider and get the 285's. you can get the nitto's in 285 for the same price as the 275.

My friend had some 285 555's (not the DRs) on his rear, and they look better than any 275 I had on mine. Here's his car

^ Looks like his rims must have low offsets, and those look like a large 285. Weird for Nitto to have wide tires.

Yeah I think I am made up my mind and going with 285/40 all around. And I know that Nittos run narrower (i have been running Nittos since 2005) so the 285 would prolly make it like a large 275

The 275 tire has a side wall of 4.33 and a width of 10.83

the 285 tire has a side wall of 4.49 (+0.16 bigger than the 275 tire) and a width of 11.22 (+0.39 bigger than the 275 tire)

I really don't think that +0.39" for width is going to matter up front

285/40/17s is the tire I'm going with

Thanks guys!!!

Just something to think about..... what offset are your wheels Jonas?

I put TT2s on my '98 last spring. I tried to do a 285/40 all-around (all 4 wheels are 9.5"), but due to being a 9.5" wheel with a more aggressive offset (45 or 46mm, can't remember right now), the 285s rubbed the bottom of the bumper cover lip (where it meets the wheel well liner) pretty badly when turning.

So I pulled the 285s off the front, and put 275s on. Now, no rubbing at all. This was all with GY GS-D3s though, which always run wide for their size.

As for appearance, the 275/285 combo looks great! I would never go back to a 275 rear tire unless they stopped making 285s in a tire I liked. 285 fits the 9.5" width much better, and looks meatier out back.

Hope that helps.
