Default wider tires in the back better handling?

Are wider tires on the back beneficial to handling? or just give the car more understeer?

I'd say it depends on your power level. if you have a higher HP car- I am sure even 315's would still oversteer. I find my car is pretty well balenced with 315 M/T drag radials...I can still get her loose when putting the power down on exits.

handling just depends on the car, mine has 315's with 4:10 gears and it will get crazy around corners depending on what gear im in or how much throttle i give it.

sounds like you have it set up. If you find it pushed the nose now- more rear grip will aggrevate that condition further.
