I jsut came back from the tire shop and they tried to mount the 17x11's but would not fit. The rim itself is hitting this "joint" looking thing on the top. Its not the black sheetmetal looking thing area which looks like it was designed to prevent mud or water from the tires from being splashed up inside.

In that picture you see the shiny area above the rotor but below the black area? Its hitting there.

I have the AFS 17x11 Rims with the "grandsport" offset.

The tires mounted on there were 315 nitto drag radials. But its not the tire that was hitting, but rather the rim.

Ideas?

 

Snubber? Is he refering to the bump stop? Some guys (on non lowered cars) cut it of. Also, not to **** on you wheaties, but most Firebird guys run the 36mm offset because the fenders are so flared.

 

Sorry man I am not too sure what that means. Is the fender the black area which prevents the water/mud splashing?

I think the grandsport are 50 something mm offset.

 

The bump stop is the big rubber bushing that keeps the car from bottoming out on the rear end. That is where many people with 11" wheels rub. Odd that some do while others don't. As for the water shield, I am not sure of what the guy in the pics did.

Yes, the GS offset is 50mm while ZR1 was 36mm. Many Firebird guys choose the ZR1 offset to stick them out just a bit farther.

 

I just found out, its not hitting the fenderwell etc. Its hitting the snubber's outer lip. Basically the thing which prevents the akle from going into the body if the shock fails

 

you HAVE to jack the car up by the rear end in order to get them to clear and fit. jack it up by the center section and then put them on and everything will clear.

 

Ahhhhhh gotcha, they jacked the car up by the SFC's not rear end, gotcha

 

Well did it work or not??? I'm dying for some 17x11s out back but am scared to death of all these horror stories a/b them not fitting.

Most 17x11 rims for the rear of fbody's will require some minor work on the the body to fit. Either that be a combination of cutting the bump stops, rolling the finder lip, and/or hitting the inner part of the fender well to avoid rubbing issues. Lowered cars especially have to pay real close attention to this. Besides a BFH, ballbat, an Adj. PHR can cure some of the issues as well, since it readjusts/recenters the rear end but it only helps some of the problems, you'll still have to do more work to make them fit.

I'm soon to have 17x11's on 315 in about another couple months. Done my homework and am ready to go

 

So you've done your homework. Do you agree with Derek98z that Pontiacs should go with the zr-1 offset as opposed to the Grandsport offset? I've never heard that before.

Ok the rims are on as of last night Had to bang the fenderwell in a little bit in the fron, thats about it :-) As per NiceTrys reccomendation, i did lift the car by the rear and whamo works like a charm no issues

 

got em on mine..no problem..t/a mite b different than a z28

 

 

you'll need a 1" spacer to make the thing +50mm offset.
1.5" will make it +38mm offset.
If you get something like 1.25" spacer, you'll be good.
Make sure you get them hubcentric.
