Best tire for 18x9.5 tire for road race and backcountry roads?

Best tire for 18x9.5 tire for road race and backcountry roads? I'm changing my setup from drag to road course, and picking up a set of 4 18x9.5 wagon wheels (yes I know they are ugly but they are cheap and in black they look ok). The Goodyear Eagle F1 supercar 285/40/18 is $99 each brand new on line if you look hard enough, are they worth it? Any other suggestions on tire size, brand or model is appreciated, trying to stay below $200 a tire if possible. I was also looking at the kuhmos and Hannooks and other sizes like 295/35, 265/40 and 275/40. Only tire I have ever run has been 3 sets of sumikomo hrz 245/50s on 16s and mt et streets.
Car will see some time at VIR and a lot of blasts through the windy roads of the Appalachians in WV, no dd time and no wet weather. 2000 miles a year. Mods in sig.

Too tall? It seems like the most popular size for people who run a square setup on 18x9.5s. I found the ones for the gt500 KR with the softer compound for $88 a piece, regular price like $449 a piece, it's so hard to pass up, but if they suck...they suck.
Those toyos are $350 a tire. And I don't need people saying "you know your a redneck when the tires on your Camaro are worth more than your Camaro" about me.

Stock 275/40/17 = 25.66 tall
285/40/18 = 26.97 tall - speedometer will be off, gearset will be slightly decreased.
285/35/18 = 25.85 tall - much more appropriate
Just because people do it does not make it a direct replacement or correct. See 5x120 wheels on 5x4.75 hubs or 315's on a 9 inch wheel. Just becasue it can be done, doesn't always mean it should be done.

Wow, I did not realise that the 18s were up to that much coin already!!
But they (along with the RA-1s, IF they are even still made in those sizes) are about the best/stickiest 'streetable' 100 treadwear tire you can get.
The Nitto NT-01s are also great, but run a little narrower actual tread width than most in a given size.

Found a set of 295/35 eagle f1 goodyears with 50% tread for $150 for all 4, and have read positive and negative comments about putting these z06 rear tires on 9.5" rims with a few people saying this is the setup they road race, should I pull the trigger?
Other option is bite the bullet on the 285/40 brand new eagle f1 supercars for $114 a tire from a non sponsor site, and with the $80 mail in rebate would be about $460 shipped. I don't know enough about wear patterns on road race/autocross tires to justify getting brand new tires right now...

F1's are junk. Hard compounds. Street tire with weak tread design. The supra in my drive way has 295/30/18's and it just spins with 430rwhp. Taking corners would be pointless.
Re11's and ra1's are good aggressive tires that can make it on the street and do well on the track.
Don't bother with rt615k or rs3's. They get hot easily and get greasy quickly. I'm sure the weight of our cars doesn't make it any better if you're using them on an open course. Auto-x is a diff story or if it's a short track. I personally do deal's gap. So 11miles one way with 314 turns will not be easy on tires. I literally melted conti extremecontact2's. The treads were all warped and they began to slip on the rim under hard braking/trail braking.
My buddy had a set of half used nitto road race tires for this 98z on our last Gap trip. He was pulling me through every turn and never got squirrelly but once or twice. After 2 days, they were done though. We ran all day, at least 8-10 passes and it was enough to fade his brakes (ebc reds) and boil his power steering fluid.

Well **** it's a little late for me now, I bought those f1s for $150. My next set of tires will be new, I just would rather destroy a $150 set of tires due to amateur driving rather than a $1500 set.

Some of the peeps on frrax.com were saying that these also become somewhat 'greasy' when very hot, as compared to the same company's older design RA-1s.

That sounds awesome because they look terrific. I was worried about the treadwear. Please post some pics of the NT05s or NT05rs! Nothing like some good pictures!

I WISH that Nitto also made that tread pattern in a 100 treadwear, stiff sidewalled, road race/autocross version (like they did with the 555Rs/555R2s).
