Default Wheel paint...

Any suggestions on what brand spray paint to use for painting wheels? Got some ZR1s(c4) and they are well used and chrome. I want to shoot them a gunmetal color for my SS. Going to use scotch brite and whatever else will scuff them and prep to hold the paint.

Any input is appreciated. Tires are still on so I'll have to tape the rubber from being sprayed.

I have been going through this thinking for the last few years and I think the best thing to do would be to pay someone to do it right. If there are chips or road rash your going to want to take it down to bare metal and fix the imperfections before painting. At least if your going to do it yourself get someone to take the tires off so you can jb weld any chips and sand flat. You can also paint all the way around the lip of the wheel so you wont have any problems in the future with a shop chipping off paint taking off and putting on tires. If your going to use spray paint, most should work just make sure you use a good clear coat and bake the paint enough for strength.

good luck

I would put more into them if they were nicer but I don't care enough to worry about making them look fantastic. My problem is, I remember using some gunmetal paint a long time ago on some wheels I did and I cannot remember the brand. It was durable and just worked awesome. I just don't want the chipped chrome and all when a flat gray would be nicer in my opinion anyway. Something dark but not black.

Just want to give them a little face lift before I throw them on.

Used some graphite wheel paint. Looks better than the peeling chrome.

Beat me to it. I have been wanting to do my zr1 wheels that color. I am tired of the hyper silver on a white car

I'm happy with the graphite, it is the color I wanted. Didn't have it at one Oreilly but they had engine paint that I liked. Went to another location and found the 2 cans of duplicolor and only needed one.

Anything involving paint, rattle can or otherwise, comes down to prep. Little time preparing the surface pays off huge in results. I did a set way back when and it made a huge differnce

I have usually sand blasted wheels when I did them, and I did these in the hard to reach places. But honestly they did not get the attention they need to look as nice as I want, but they have curb rash and what not and I wasn't spending a good portion of my life getting the peeling chrome off. In good with them till I get some better wheels.

I have a set of black wheels I did YEARS ago and they still hold the rattle can paint, but I blasted the hell out of them.

Post pics when you are done. I would not mind seeing how this paint looks. Did you also get the clear coat?

The pic I posted is with the graphite duplicolor. I didn't clear coat them, I didn't want them glossy.

I used VHT wheel paint to get rid of the chrome bead on my wheels. Took some 400 grit and went to town on them, after that I used a 3M scotch brite pad to do some final scuffing. Wiped it all down with carb cleaner and then shot them satin black. Haven't had any chipping yet. I agree with you and the others, prep is key.
