Default Alternative for BFG KDW2?

The tread is starting to get low on my KDW2's and it looks like they're not for sale any more. I've really enjoyed these tires and would've bought them again. All 4 tires are 275/40R17. The car is my dry weather DD although with the amount of road trips I take it on, I always get caught in rain a few times per year.

Is there anything comparable to this tire that's around the same price? I've ran Goodyear Eagle F1 GS-D3's in the past but didn't like how quickly they wore out and they're too expensive.

I'm a fan of BFG KDWs' also but evidently the KDW series is 'gone'. I run Nitto for street fun and BFG for travelling and non-summer weather. I currently have the BFG G-Force Super Sports'. They're an all-season tire that I got for potentially travelling in case of winter snow. They are great in snow and on ice, heavy rain handling proved to be excellent+, and the dry handling thru the high G turns came to be equal to the old KDW series. Unfortunately for me, those are discontinued too so I'll be have to be looking at their newer ones.

I cannot provide a very well-informed recommendation. However, earlier this year I replaced the stock Goodyear Eagle F1 GS 275/40/17’s on my 98 TA with same size BFG Comp 2 A/S’s. I had been reading about tire options for ~4 years prior to purchasing. I do not drive that car much, and not aggressively at all when I do. The only difference I noticed between those 2 - tires is that the BFG’s tramline much more, especially with the longitudinal grooves on expressways; and the BFG’s are not as aesthetically pleasing, IMO. The appearance matters not much to me, but after installation I now understand some peoples’ comments about those looking like truck tires.

I did some shopping and I have it narrowed down to 3 options. I don't want an all season and I want tread wear that's better than the Eagle F1's rating of 280.

Continental ExtremeContact Sport: Max performance summer, $183 per tire, tread wear of 340AA A
BFG g-Force Sport COMP-2: Ultra high performance summer, $165 per tire, tread wear of 340AA A
Firestone Firehawk Indy 500: Ultra high performance summer, $154 per tire, tread wear of 340A A

Anybody ever run any of these?

I haven't had any of these, but know people that do. The conti are a lot like a cheaper version of the Michelin PSS... that is the best performance tire of that group. Wear is quite good for that type of tire. The firestone would be the 2nd best bet and I would actually expect more tire life, but just lower performance.

I just put a set of the Firestone Indy 500’s on my car, and I am extremely happy with the performance. I went back to 17” from 18” and the ride is substantially better than the Toyo tires I had prior.

I would say the only thing I would be hesitate about is the weight. While it’s not a heavy tire by any means, I just expected it to be lighter. I wrote down the weights (don’t have them in front of me) of the 18’s vs the 17’s and I guess I was expecting a larger delta. My 18’s were replica C5 thin spoke wheels and the new wheels are OEM 35th anniversary wheels.

All in in all I don’t regret it by any means. The Firestone’s are a great tire, and I would recommend them.

I ran the Firestones on my 96 corvette. They did not hook up for ****. My cousin has them on his garaged ws6, they have a ton of sidewall dry rotting and they're not even 4 years old. I have never liked firestone/Bridgestone. The price is tempting but personally I don't like them at all.

I've heard nothing but good things from the Toyo R888r. They seem to hook better than some drag radials with a competition sidewall. No idea what kind of mileage you can expect but I tend to see anywhere from 20-30,000 on most ZR rated tires. I know the Toyo wasn't in your list of 3 but before you decide check out some reviews on those, they seem to be pretty badass. I've seen some high hp cars that couldn't break em loose from a slow roll and the same car was blowing off a set of Mickey's.

That's because it's a 100 treadwear tire. Probably wear out too quick for what the OP is wanting.
I think the Toyo R888R is the same rubber compound as the Nitto NT01.

The Nitto NT05 is a pretty good and affordable summer performance tire. Not well loved in rain though.

Yup, I'm fairly certain that's right. Not the tire you want for a DD but it'll get the job done for a car you don't drive daily.

I know it's maybe 10 days later, but I've run both the BFG's and the Continentals. I just got the continentals back on the front of my car and will be doing the rears again soon. They don't tramline as bad as the Bridgestone's they replaced, and I love the grip. And I don't drive my car easy either. I daily the car and push it pretty hard. This is my second go around on the conti's and I highly recommend them. The BFG's were ok but not as good in the wet as the conti's. Wear is pretty good on the conti's as the last set I got close to 30k miles on. Might have been a couple k less. Stability is very confident as well. That, and they look good too, IMO.

Another vote for the Conti's here. They surpass the other two options with wet traction. I have run the BFGs for the past two seasons (in varying sizes) and there has been no issues for regular street driving, but they really do lack in the rain when driven aggressively....I had a not so fun time at a few rainy Autox's this season because the car would just not hook in the front or rear.

I've been thinking about this lately as well. I was also a big fan of the KD/KDW series and still have an old set of KDW (original, not "2") on my '98 which is rarely driven. I'll have to replace them eventually though. My pick of your group listed above would be the BFG Sport Comp 2. I would not get the all-season version mentioned above unless you drive the car in temps of the 40s or lower.

The car gets driven a few times per month during the winter if it's lucky. Conditions have to be pretty good. I really loved the whole KDW series. I had a set of originals too before wearing them out and getting the KDW2's. These tires have been on the car for about 7 years. I was really torn between the Sport Comp 2's and the Continentals but yesterday I went ahead and ordered the Continentals. Never used any of their tires. Hopefully they show up today and I can post some pictures soon.

I always found Nitto 555 to be a great all around street tire for a DD. It's does nothing great really, but everything pretty well, without any real negatives. Now they are making the 555 G2. I've not run this tire, but have heard it's improved over the older 555's.

I've got the conti's on 2 cars. Only complaint I've had if they sit for any period of time they get a flat spot. After a mile or 2 they round out again.
