Balancing Welds?
Balancing Welds? I just had a guy come in the shop recently with some slicks and Weld prostars...and i had to mount and balance. now i examined the wheels and noticed that there what appears to be a steel insert inside the bolt area of the wheel. the insert was loose, i noticed i could move it with my fingers. it didnt move much, as in the studs would always go through the holes no matter how much it was moved, but it moved enough to make a decent amount of noise when the wheel was spinning. Because of this i felt the balance would be innacurate.
well i tried a dynamic balance on it and the insert really made the wheels a bitch to balance, as in it was physically impossible to balance, even if i got it zeroed, if i spun it again it would have been off. so i static balanced it and got it to zero fairly quick, but i knew it wasnt good so i just told the guy that the wheels probably werent going to balance good. it was only the rears so i figured it wouldnt cause any problems anyway.
how do you guys deal with these issues, or do you have your race wheels balanced at all?

I've never had a problem getting Welds balanced. Most places have a cone-shaped insert on that threaded rod that the wheel goes onto, and it "centers" the metal spacer okay. Usually the drag tires are more out of whack than the rims, haha.
our cones definitely werent catching it, and it was slightly inset from the rest of the hub area so i dont even know if it would have been possible, maybe a bad batch? i sure as hell couldnt figure it out...

and the wheels didnt take alot of weight, they just didnt want to zero out, like it kept jumping around...

I never had any problems after getting mine balanced. If it's bad enough that you can tell they're out of balance I'd get them redone, other than that you'll probably never notice anyway.
