a 40" wide on a 9.5" rim will never happen,do you mean a 40series tire,if so what width tire.

It also depends on the design of the tires. Nitto's run narrow, so they will probably look odd in that size. However a tire that runs wide will probably look normal. It also depends on your taste. I absolutely despise tires that are too narrow for the wheels they are on. It looks ricer-retarded to me. I always try to go as wide as safely possible.

The 255/40/18 will lean in. A 275/35/18 front and 295/35/18 combo would work well, assuming you are doing 18x9.5 on all four corners. Been doing ALOT of research lately on tires and rim combos. I have 255/35/18s mounted on a 9.5 on the front of my TA and they look terrible. But I am going to an 18x8.5 wheel so that tire will work well on that wheel. In the rear I am looking to go with a 295/30/19 on a 9.5 wheel.

you should asked about a 255 on a 9.5 rim.

40 is the side wall height. 255 is the width so a 255 on a 9.5 regardless of the side wall will not look good. a 255/50 or 255/60 255/30 none of these will be wide enuff. just differnt heights.

Some guys came up and asked me what size tires i have in the back because they were huge. I said they are 315's. They just gave me a blank look, and asked "Oh, so is that a 40 or 50 series?" So i said "Well, its a 315/35/17..." Got the blank stare again. "They must be 50 series." What the **** is that supposed to mean? Is this old school terminology that I don't know about, or were these just stupid rednecks?

I just looked it up and found that a 255/40/18 is: 10.04 inches in section width, that wouldnt work on a 9.5 inch wheel?

It's not that it wouldn't work. It will work. It just will look dumb. The side wall will taper IN instead of being flat (ideal) or tapering OUT (not ideal but looks better than IN).

A 275 width tire is 10.8 inches section width and that gives a perfectly flat sidewall. Going larger will cause the wall to taper out (gives a more aggressive look), going smaller will cause the wall to taper in (gives a really odd look).

You have to remember that a 9.5" wheel is 9.5 inches from beadseat to beadseat. The wheel is actually about 10.5" from outer rim to outer rim. You never want a tire that has less section width than the rim-rim width of the wheel it's on.
