Question 255/50/16 vs 315/35/17 for TRACTION?

Out of 255/50/16 and 315/35/17 drag radials, which one is better for traction? 255/50/16 has more sidewall, and 315/35/17 is wider.

What do you guys think?

Im gonna guess a 255/50/16 for you.It will be a little lighter for sure. They worked great for me until i upped to the 4.10s,ss4000.

My 315/15/17 hoosiers hook about the same at the track as some 255/60/16s mickey radials I used previously. But on the street the hoosiers hook better.

All depends on the tires your running. The BFGs i had on my stockers in 245 gripped better then the 315 sumitomos im running now.

With the same tiire on each, the wider tire will grip better. Had the comparison been with a 16" wheel and a 20" wheel then the sidewall difference would come into play more.

I have gotten a lot of low 1.7 and quite a few mid 1.6 sixtys out of the 315/35/17 nitto DRs. I have a 3600 stall and at the time a tr224 cam and TSP 5.3 heads making 400 to the ground locked.

I'd like to bring this one back from the dead because I may change my set up

These are the 2 tires I am comparing:

255/50/16 = BFG DR
315/35/17 = Nitto DR

Which will hook better?

Def back from the dead, but I'll give my experience...

I've had 245-16 and 315-17 Nitto DRs and I couldn't get better than a 1.7x on the 315's. With the 16" I had a few 1.5x's and lots of 1.6-7s.

Track prep and time of year/weather may have had something to do with it though, since the 245 were during fall and 315 was middle of summer.

The 315s hooked 10x's better on the street than the 245s though!
