That particular solution requires a factory CD changer to work. If you don't have a factory changer, there are adapters available (e.g GM9-AUX) that plug into the CD changer port on the head unit and provide RCA jacks for connecting an auxiliary source such as an iPod or satellite radio. There are also adapters that are specifically for the iPod (e.g. iPod2Car) that will keep the iPod's battery charged.

x2. If you do this, use a switched jack like this: https://ls1tech.com/forums/6865143-post5.html I've heard that there are some volume/quality issues with using this method. On the other hand, it'll accept anything that uses an RCA/headphone jack - not just iPods.

I went with this route (because iPods and parts are easy/cheap to find now, unlike other MP3 players I have - that and the quality is perfect). All 2000+ F-body OEM headunits have support for CD changers built in, even if you have a headunit with the CD player built in. Using this auxiliary input support, you can fast forward, rewind, and skip forward and backward through tracks in your iPod and it even charges it! I found a Peripheral brand adapter in a local electronics megastore collecting dust. All of the Best Buys here in Southern Cali that I checked no longer carried the model that works for F bodies.

If that's the case, then check out the iPod mod links above ^. Although if you and your friends only have iPods, then I would use a hardwired interface like iPod2Car or a GM9-AUX adapter. MUCH better quality and you can ff/rwd/skip tracks. Many aftermarket headunits also have support for iPod adapters too.

The GM9-AUX has had reported problems where it seems to go "brain dead" and will not respond to input. This is fixed by disconnecting and reconnecting the adapter but it can be an awkward and annoying problem. The GM9-AUX is not an iPod specific adapter - it is a generic auxiliary input adapter that provides no control of the iPod and will not recharge its battery.

Does anyone know if this unit will work in place of our CD changers?

I realize that it is for 03-06 GM products. I was just wondering if it might work with our radios as well. I thought that maybe the connector is the same and since our cars are so old it has more recent years listed.

No, the interface used in newer head units is quite different from the one in our cars.

Yes, that one will work. There was a thread a few weeks ago that describes the installation complete with photos: click here.

I did some extensive searching for this about 9 months ago and decided to get this one.... http://www.discountcarstereo.com/detail.aspx?ID=724

It plugs into the CD changer port on the back of the factory radio. You loose the use of the factory CD changer but retain steering wheel control since it acts like the factory CD changer. I tried several iPods with good results (iPod classic 80gig & nano). I used the dice electronics http://diceelectronics.com/ mounting accessory and looked through my partsbin and found a rubber boot that fit in my cigarette lighter. I mounted the boot to the back of the dice unit, drilled a hole under the cig lighter for the iPod cord and had a removeable mount for the iPod classic right in front of the cig lighter! The USA Spec unit allowed me to either operate the iPod from the car stereo/steering wheel or use the iPod controls. This has the advantage of not locking the iPod screen so I could play music throug the car stereo while playing a photo slideshow on the iPod.....even while driving!

I have since decided to get an aftermarked head unit so the USA Spec iPod adaptor is for sale if anyone is interested....
