Default Useful features of Iphone/Itouch in cars.

Just came across these 2 applications for iphone/itouch users.

The first one pairs up with a compatible viper alarm system(s).

The hardware unit uses some kind of cellphone signals i'm guessing. The software gets installed onto your iphone or itouch and turns it into an extended remote for the car. You can do basically anything on the phone you could with the alarm's remote but you can be anywhere. Its kinda novelty but still cool.

Not going to post any non sponsor links.
google viper smart start

The second app is much more useful and cheap.

The hardware is a small obdII port scanner that has a wifi card in it. It reads all the info from the obdII port and displays into the iphone/itouch.

It has guages for many useful things like A/F ratio, 60fts, launch, mpg, mph and also does rwhp & tq readings.

google rev iphone app

That is all in an iPhone or iTouch? That is cool! Can you unlock the doors and stuff with it? Remote start maybe?

It works on Iphone and Itouch. If you use itouch, just make sure you have a wifi connection like you would need to watch you tube.

Yep it will do everything a traditional remote does (lock, unlock, open trunk, start the car) but you can be anywhere really.

I doubt it, no offense but as a fbody owner and a security consultant(hacker police), I assure you that it wouldn't be worth their time/effort.

LOL! damn right man.
So far my iphone replaced my mp3 player, camera, psp, gps, netbook, phone.
I just wish they had a radar detector built into these things too.

The only other network that uses GSM networks(sim cards) is T-Mobile and they support services for Iphone. So if you buy a used Iphone n use Tmobile, this would work for you. Sprint/Nextel, Verizon wouldn't since they don't have sim cards.

So you have to have internet for the remote capability to work? So if you're in the middle of no where your itouch wont work...?

Yeah, . . . no. . . . From what it looks like the only supported provider is AT&T. I think it somehow dials through their network only.

If anyone can confirm this works on T-Mobile it will be next toy to have.

This is from smart start's FAQ.
"Currently SmartStart is available only for the iPhone and iPod Touch. Viper SmartStart is designed to be installed and used with authorized Apple iPhones with AT&T service, or authorized iPod Touch devices. Any unauthorized modification to the iPhone or iPod Touch software or hardware may interfere with proper installation or operation of the Viper SmartStart application."

If you were reading that, i think its just their way of saying keep the iphone on at&t's network

If at&t was a requirement, this wouldn't work for an itouch on wifi network.

I doubt they are concerned or even know what service provider is the phone getting the signal from.
