what would cause the reverse lights to stay on while the car key is turned on and running... thanks

The most likely cause of the problem is the backup light switch on the right side of the transmission (item #3 in the diagram).



Unfortunately, unlike many older cars, the switch is not adjustable - it can only be replaced. The switch has two wires - brown and light green. It should have power on the brown wire when the ignition is on and output power on the light green wire only when the transmission is in reverse.

 

Just curious... but where do you get all of these diagrams from?

I have an electronic version of the factory service manual so I just cut and paste drawings and schematics when they seem helpful.

No, quite the opposite. If the switch is not plugged in, the backup lights will never come on regardless of gear position.

 

Hmmmm. Well I don't have it plugged up and they are on the whole time the key Is turned on.

 

I unplugged all sensors off the tranny and still on.

 

WhiteBird00 ur the man. i looked at ur drawings alil better and figured out that i had the sensor in the wrong spot... it works now like a champ thanks man

 

The backup light switch went out on my Dakota when I first got it. It's a common problem on those trucks. It's an easy fix. Just make sure the wrench is going the correct way.

 

I cannot find the sensor for the reverse lights on rock auto... Any links?
