Default Tuff Stuff AD244 Alternator

I had issues with voltage dropping, and my car stalling out. On top of that I had dimming headlights, low voltage without the stereo on and so forth. I did the Big 3, with 2ga cable from the local auto parts store. Nothing happened. Battery and alternator tested GOOD at Advance Auto, I was still skeptical, so I bought the Tuff Stuff alternator. I got it in the mail today and put it on my car. It's the OEM replacement for 99-04 GM trucks (no chrome or black paint). Night and day difference with voltage! At idle I cranked the music (3 amps totaling 1200 watts RMS), the rear defroster, the heater, the headlights, and stepped on the brakes and put it in gear. NOTHING happened to my volt gauge. I am thoroughly impressed and the price was right off Summit Racing. P/N 8237. No core charge, no hassle.

The alternator was the problem to begin with. Sounds as if you just needed more amperage and the stocker was just not up to the task, especially with all the amps you are running. Nice upgrade! If your going to replace the alternator that was a good choice. The other mods you did are just going to help it even more. When you go that big with an audio system you really need a better alternator to keep out of issues later.

Ok so if this is 145a I'm really curious to know what our stock alternators push out. Also I have a big stereo build coming up and wanted to know if this would be enough for lets say 3000 watts or so?

If that's 3kw rms your going to want a real alternator...

I have a single RE 35-1D around 1,500w rms @ 1ohm and I tried the truck alternator, it couldn't keep up...

very true, you need a $400+ alternator to keep up with over 1,000 watts rms. the truck alternator i've only heard has ever worked once...in this thread. so maybe he is lucky, maybe give it 6 months and see if the result is the same.

also most sub-$400 HO alternators put out a shitload of amperage at high rpms, but are even worse than stock at idle rpm's, which doesn't make any sense because most people buy aftermarket HO alternators so their lights don't dim while their car sits at idle. so, stick to stock or spend the $$.
