It depends on the audio characteristics of the speaker you're using. I had a set of Pioneers in my '96 Z-28 since '97, and had those baffles in place. I recently decided to get some new speakers, "just because". I got a set of Infinity References. The "tech rep" with Crutchfield suggested that I not use the baffles in the rear at all, and just use half of the baffles in the doors, to shield the speakers from rain water...

Yea for the mids on the door. They even make then for our 4 inch rear fill speakers. I am wondering if they actually push more sound out? I know they are mainly used for wet locations.

Yes, just "on the top" of the speaker, as a shield from any water that might get down past the rubber weatherstrip at the top of the door. An easier way, and what I did, was keep the outer portion of the baffle, so you can easily mount it to the door, and just cut a 1"x2" piece out of the baffle's bottom side, so the speakers can "breathe".

They will protect your speakers.

But do cut out a small hole to let breath. Quarter sized atleast.

If not you will change the frequency response of the driver as it will act as a very small enclousure and give you wierd output. They wont' dampen as well as sound deadening, but rubber between the speaker and metal does reduce vibration of the said panels.

I made my mounts for the doors out of 1/4" oak and MDF to reduce vibration, and covered them in sound deadening from e-design audio, which also made em water resistant. Totally replace the crapo factory plastic. Really helps.
