A JL W7 IMO, tightest, punchiest sub that still hits hard...a W6 is real nice too

JL 10" at the biggest. A mix of 8's and 12's would give you the broadest spectrum.

I'm running they JL 10s and it keeps up with fast double bass very well.

You do not need, nor would want, to mix different size subs in the same system. thats only going to casue issues and would sound horrible unless the 8s were being solely used as midbass speakers.

I'd look into 8w3's but just 1 of them wont hit very hard...maybe do a single 10w3

I'd go sealed if you want the sub to be as punchy as possible

Would you mind posting a video of how your system responds and sounds with the double bass rolls and rock music?

as said, a 10 in a sealed box would be the best for what you're looking for. the w3/w6 are both good options. the w7 isnt as tight as the w3/w6. another very good choice is the polk audio sr series. they just ended the series, so its going to be harder to get, but onlinecarstereo has the sr104 (10" single 4ohm) on clearance for $159. the polk is an extremely clean, tight sq sub. i would get this myself if my new job didnt allow me to get discounts on jl.
as far as being "budget friendly", dont let the price of jl point you away. jump on craigslist. i paid $75 for the 10w3v3 im using right now when i got it. its going in the wife's car when im ready to redo my camaro. im waiting till i can do everything at once so right now im using that in the old model ho box (upside down so the box fits in my hatch area) running off a 500/1.

W7 is the flagship. its tighter than a W3 by far, but its a close call compaired with a W6. some say the W7 isn't worth the extra money over the W6, I'm not one of them. The W3 is considered the SPL woofer, the W6 is considered the SQ woofer, and the W7 is considered the SQL woofer. (Sound Pressure Level, Sound Quality, Sound Quality Level (meaning louder SQ))

(RULES: no 8" midbass driver counts as a sub, hence midbass) I can't stand when people put up bad info when they have no idea what they're saying

if you've got the cash for a pair of 10w3's, put them in a sealed box on 1000w rms and you'll have an awesome sub system, especially for what you want.

If that's too rich for your blood do a pair of 8w3's, don't be thrown by the 8" cone size, a pair of them will still hit and be even tighter than the 10s...3 8's would be really cool if you've got the room

as for amps, if you do the 2x 10s or 3x 8s options are the Alpine MRP-M1000 or MRX-M100, the MRX replaced the MRP 2 years ago but alpine still made the MRP because it was cheaper, but now the MRX-M100 was replaced by the MRX-M120 for the same price and should ship this month. the M100 should be on clearance right now.

do not pay retail prices any good dealer will cut you a nice deal if you get the subs and amp from them!

You're only limited by your budget and how much room you wanna give up. W7's are really nice but as you've seen are a bit pricey, there are a ton of other options out there. As for a single 8 not hitting that hard, not true http://www.soundsolutionsaudio.com/f...ual-1-testing/ Multiple 150db scores on a single SA-8, granted its not the off the shelf model, but again, that goes back to only being limited by budget and space. For a little more practical application, this will be very similar to my setup once i get the PR in, since the port length for a single 8 is rediculous. And this one is off the shelf http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9k6b5...ayer_embedded#! . Hell i had 2 L5 12's in a subthump ttop box on a zx1500 (older model) and was very pleased with how it sounded, especially for a failry cheap setup

Thank you all for your input! Now 2 more questions. What gauge wiring should be used and is a cap necessary for this?
