Solder

I work in the electronics field I've solder all kinds of surface mount though hole blah blah. Why wont any of the wire in these cars take solder? I had to fix speaker wire, wires for the back up lights, hatch etc. not one wire would take solder for crap. Is there some type of super flux I need to solder them? I have a Weller soldering iron, not some radio shack crap LOL,
Still no luck

I've never had the issues you have had.

I also know that crimps are preferred for cars. The thought being the vibrations will cause the solder connection to break.

The wire in cars is insulated with Soy-oil based plastic, it doesn't take solder worth a hoot, and the residue seems to go away about the same time the wire melts.. LOL

Also,, properly done crimps, are the proper way to wire vehicles, soldering wires to connectors will fatigue the wire right at the end of the solder and eventually they break off, UNLESS you back up the solder job with a heavy shrink wrap, or you only solder on the tip of. the wire to the connector and don't let solder bleed down the wire through the crimp. .

None of the aircraft I was around in the military used solder in the wiring harnesses either.. Just NICE crimped connectors properly done with the right crimping tools..

Because the car is so old the wires have a bit of corrosion on them. Ask me how I know, 1999 Silverado has the same issue. It is a pain to get the stuff off.

I'm a tech at a GM dealer and been building on cars about 40 years now. The best thing I've used yet it the low temp solder connectors. The import companies use them but GM doesn't. They still use the good old heat shrink crimp connectors. So I supply my own low temp deals, that way I don't have any comebacks. Haven't failed me yet.
