Ya might have a hard time finding original speakers that are not blown. Even my low mile (17k miles) Camaro had blown speakers when I got it. These cars are 20+ years old now and the paper cones were never designed to age well.

Id also assume any NOS (new on shelf New Old Stock) units are likely dry rotted and ready to blow.

might you consider some after market units after you exhaust your search.

No doubt... I have been looking now for about 3 weeks... Found a dude but he is wanting a ridiculous amount..

I'd like to retain stock amp... ( monsoon) i have an OEM monsoon deck with Blue tooth... The other 5 speakers sound awesome...

The originals are still just fine in my '98. I replaced the sail panel subs back in like ~2005 because one of them had a small rattle, but I think it was just factory-defective since the car was still so new/low mile back then. But the door speakers are 26 years old now and still doing perfect. 19k miles on the car, and it has never been stored outside of a garage since new.

I think age is a lesser factor than how the speakers were used, and ambient storage conditions. I have a full spare set that I'm not interested in parting with, but I've kept them in ideal climate controlled conditions all these years and I bet they are just fine too.

My 02 still has the stock Monsoon system in it. For it being 23 years old this April everything works and it still has a great sound. I have debated going aftermarket several times, but I don’t have a problem with the way mine sounds.

I just replaced mine with Kee and then replaced the sails maintaining the OEM amp and head unit. Even at 50K garage kept miles on the originals I had to refoam the cone a couple of years ago as both deteriorated away into nothing. Can yours still be rebuilt? It wasn't hard to do. Looking back I should have just done the Kee switch then as the new ones are stupid better than OEM.

After all that I did end up replacing the monsoon head unit though. I swore up and down I wasn't getting back into this stereo thing, but here I am.

If the original speakers are blown, then I could definitely see upgrading while you're in there (since they'd have to come out for repair anyway). Seems like the Kee setup would be the way to go in that case. But I wouldn't replace the HU unless you are on an actual mission to upgrade the whole system. Most of the aftermarket radios don't look especially good in these cars, particularly the touch screens...

If I ever exhaust my inventory of stock speakers, I could see getting a set from Kee. Folks really seem to like them. But the stock HU is staying put!

I found a speaker rebuilder because both sail panel speakers have about 1/3 of the foam missing. It's a busy time of year, but the rebuilder did return my email and asked for pics of the speakers before sending them off for rebuild. I mentioned in another thread I am a senior and losing my hearing, so great stereo in a car is not that important. I just don't want it to sound like a big fart every time I turn it on. LOL. BTW, My home stereo is killer. People complain the treble is too high, but that is what I can't hear well anymore.

If you're not too concerned about audiophile sound quality, there are less expensive options for replacing the speakers than what Kee offers (Kee's offerings are the best, but they are admittedly expensive).

Since you have trouble with higher frequencies, you can pick up a pair of 6.5" coaxial speakers for the doors and leave the factory tweeters as well - they don't usually degrade, so they should be fine and it will give you extra treble up front. You can get a decent pair of coaxial speakers such as Kenwood, JVC, or Pioneer for under $30. Avoid the really cheap brands like Boss or Pyle.

For the sail panels, you can get a pair of Bazooka 6.5" subs from Kee Audio or elsewhere for around $100. These are the correct dual voice coil 4-ohm speakers that match the factory configuration and have been very popular around here for years as an upgrade from factory. You could also put another pair of coaxial speakers there, but frankly they'll sound like crap because of the way the Monsoon amp sends only low frequency signal to the sail panels.

Personally I wouldn't even bother with the hatch area speakers since they're there only for rear fill. But if you want to fix them as well, you can find 4" replacements quite cheap - this is one place where a $12 pair of Boss speakers would be acceptable. Again, leave the rear tweeters alone as they are probably fine. Bear in mind that whether you rebuild the factory hatch speakers or replace with aftermarket, you'll have to rig your own mounting because they are riveted in place from the factory.

I suspect you'll find that going this budget route will be less costly than rebuilding while actually providing a sound upgrade.

Thanks for the info. "sounds" exactly what I was looking for (pun intended). LOL. Family has a history of hearing loss earlier than most. Guess I got the crappy sound gene from my mom's side of the family. Uggg. I can still understand speech fine, but I know in a few more years I will be using hearing aids like others on Mom's side.
Anyway, will look into those options. Thank you very much.

Only 7000 miles on my 2002 and some of the stock speakers were shot. I went with Kee audio level 2 and its so much better than stock. They fit very good too. They cant bee seen, so I have no problem with "originality" I have all the stock speakers but if I sold them, they might last a week-month-year?????? Speakers wear out by age. Once one speaker starts to go, the others wont be far behind. Yeah the Kee speakers are a bit pricey, but the sound quality makes up for it.

Apparently not, otherwise my 26 year old, 19k mile speakers would have worn out before your 22 year old, 7k mile speakers. Mine are still doing fine. I think ambient conditions and how they are used will play a bigger role than age alone at this vintage. At a certain point I would agree that age-related deterioration is inevitable, but mine don't seem to be at that point yet.

FWIW, I agree with the Kee upgrade. I'd go that route too, and just leave the stock HU. I haven't seen a touchscreen that looks better than the stock HU in any 4th gen, IMO.
